Looks like the tank right there with the red cap.
Is there something wrong with it?
There are generic replacements online. Any of those aluminum can type should have mounting brackets to attach and some fuel line for gas supply.

The engine has a tank already on it. It's that plastic L shaped thing on top of the engine. Maybe your question was " what kind of gas does it take ". Low grade regular like you put in your car.

I’m going to venture that the gas tank is kaput, cracked or it leaks. Some plastic tanks are fairly thin and are easily damaged with ‘normal‘ use or the plastic gets brittle after a while and you are right, that is an “old man” go kart that is probably 20+ years old. The engine is an old man Tecumseh Powersport series probably 5 or 6 horsepower. More photos will reveal what it is but I suspect the gas tank will be easy to find if you need a new one.

That’s a gift that will be remembered. Ask as many questions as you feel comfortable with, then go past your comfort zone (to break the dreaded “dumb question“ and “too many questions” stigma). Good that you started early and this isn’t last minute preparations. 👍

Unless you’re really crafty, the seat looks like replacement might be a better option especially for a Christmas gift where the giftee sort of expects perfection. I believe this is a more or less drop-in replacement (for Manco karts) but measure yours and take note of the product dimensions to be sure:

Landmaster is the parent company of the defunct Manco brand and has a few of the old parts lists. Guessing the Fox 2X5 LXT is a model 485/486. These aren’t much to go by but will help you identify the kart and parts can still often be found by searching “Manco ####”.

Does anyone know what gas tank to use for those go kart?

Show us photos of the Tecumseh engine, specifically the engine info (numbers) so we can match part numbers to serial numbers and see what gas tank you need, otherwise someone else may know exactly what you need just by sight.

What was wrong with the gas tank? You never told us.
