Hey guys,

I am looking to build an Esky Cart from scratch (esky = coolbox for non Aussies) and have bought an engine, second hand but never used.

I am happy working with engines and building stuff as I rebuild and maintain 2 stroke scooters and we build machines from scratch at work.

The engine I got was a Loncin 148f-2 80cc that I intend to add to a frame and the Esky. I am not used to these engines though and wondered if anyone knew more about them, like best clutch to use, advice on gearing, best way to wire a stop button as it didn't seem to have one, and any other tips on them?

Thanks,

G'Day Mate! And welcome! 80cc isn't going to do much. You'll have to put some tall gearing in it to get any reliable motion. 8:1 maybe? There are more qualified folks on here to answer your questions, I'll shut up and wait.

Cheers mate, yea, I know 80cc isn't going to be a speed machine, but the plan isn't that, just need something to push along some beer and an average person at a 'fun' speed... :)

I think they’re a fine engine and they came standard on Baja Doodlebug and other “entry level” Chinese mini bikes, and probably still do on basic Coleman mini bikes and such.

Honestly, no one has paid much attention to them, preferring an immediate upgrade to an engine of 196cc and up.

Nearly all of the manufactured minibikes from the 1960s came with engines well under 206cc or a rated 5HP.
3HP was probably most common, and it wasn’t about speed per se, it was just the novelty of a mini bike.

I didn’t quite understand “coolbox” for the non-Aussie, I don’t like to assume, but yeah it’s a cooler on wheels that you intend to build. Didn't know the Esky name either. https://www.esky.com.au/

I think standard gearing, 5:1 with a centrifugal clutch, would be okay and honestly, the possibility of lifting the cooler out of the truck bed or carrying it a short distance (as intended) would be more feasible with the smaller engine.

Can’t wait to see the project take form. G’day 👋
