As many of you have noticed (and posted on), Fabroman started a thread on musical tastes. It's done quite well, and helped defuse an imminent battle on another thread. As one of the people who were around the perimeter of the impeding war, I have to admit that. This thread is not one of those (at least I hope not.).

Here in my part of the world, we have not one, but TWO radio stations who were starting to play Christmas music a couple of days BEFORE Halloween. One went full time a full week before Thanksgiving, the other the day after. And the advertizing made them look like the late starters.

So here's my question; if a holiday is more than one to two months away, should we be forced to listen to the same seasonal songs for such a long time that we get sick of it, or should the station managers be brought up on charges? (Don't even get me started on the advertisers....)

In decades past, I loved the holidays; now? My answer isn't fit for polite conversation......

How about every one else?

EDIT: If you haven't figured it out already, I'm in burnout mode......

I have a sunroom and feed wild birds. I go out in the morning and drink coffee and watch the birds. I have a radio out there that stays tuned to a Christian radio station. They start the day after Thanksgiving and it burns me up. Yes- Jesus is the reason for the season, but it detracts from the impact of the holiday due to overexposure. Besides- what does "Jingle bell rock" or "Rudolph the red nose reindeer" have to do with it?

In a week I'm really missing the uplifting spiritual music and sick of the Christmas crap with 3 weeks go. It's like running Superbowl commercials from now until then.

I'm looking forward to day after next. I'm with you bro and I'll give you a double Amen on that.

LOOL..
well it's about the same around here...
starting in October (earlier every year.. at least it feels like it) they start to play christmas tunes...
favourite song "last christmas" over and over and over and over..

Last year it was.. my favourite radio station made it a joke.
They played it on first of August announced as "Well.. this year we are at least first!"
This year they refused to play that song (yes they played many other songs you do not want to hear) but that was/is off the playlist.. just for the laughs :D
Even callers cannot request that song...

And I'd take bets I will hear it on that station in April next year ;)

Anyways..
I try to avoid to listen to the radio this time of the year for a reason.
My favourite webcomic put it this way several years ago:

I do not like the cold, the darkness..
I do not like winter at all.
What I like is being with the family (well if I have an escape plan ;)) and the food :D

I don't have words for how irritating Christmas music is. I am virtually a hermit nowadays. Sometimes I go into town and I'm reminded that there are still crazy people who run around shopping for useless gifts and listening to 24 hour Christmas songs..... and it makes me glad that I can come home to my pigs and chickens and my own record collection.

I don't listen to the radio. FM or AM anyway. I'll listen to satellite in my girlfriend car sometimes, but that's it. Radio pretty much sucks.

I am forced to hear the Christmas music in convenience stores and whatnot though. It's a drag. I agree with everyone.

I do however, get a kick out of watching A Christmas Story every year. Classic.

We got out good

No stupid Christmas songs
No stupid Christmas tv shows

Infact apart from the derogations in the centre of town it's been a good season
Even then
The local shire. Workers only put up the lights and decorations 2 weeks ago

Even right now (its Christmas now here)
The local am station is playing a greatest hits count down

I was raised in a devout Catholic family &, as a result, from the age of ten until I was 16, I was a member of a church choir (you may have heard of them, St Mary's Cathedral Choir in Sydney). Christmas was exhausting, even back then...

As I got older & had a family, Christmas became about the kids but, after a few years of trials, tribulations & everything seeming to blow up in my face around this time of year, for me, Christmas became a chore...

Through all this, the traditional carols & modern christmas songs have been there adnauseum, so much so that they now irritate the heck out of me AT ANY TIME! If I do ever find myself in the mood to listen to christmas music, there are a few select songs from my choir days that I can & will listen to in their entirity, many of which some or most of you would not know...

Speak it brethren, speak it! Ho ho ho-ly crap, I gotta live thru this stuff again. Yeesh. A chore indeed.

To cheer myself back up again, I enjoy the following selections:

Cheech And Chong's "Santa Clause And His Old Lady"
Bob And Doug Mackenzie's "12 Days Of Christmas" (Canadian thing, y'all might need to look that one up)
Spinal Tap's "Christmas With The Devil"

I enjoy Christmas music, but only the stuff that has something to it... those songs like you mentioned, they drive me berserk for the most part. Every once in a while though I can handle some of them.

The radio stations start playing Chrstmas music after Thanksgiving, but not full bore. Maybe Christmas Day they will play only Christmas music... one station has a 72 hour music "marathon"... dont like that station, its "old foagy" music lol.

I listen to alot of internet radio, as it was getting closer to Christmas they started playing more and more Christmas music, its more rockin out stuff that I like. Need more like that haha.

That comic pretty much sums it up for me; now, how do I find out the names and email addresses of the music directors of the station's in question????? Hmmmmm......

While I'm single, with no kids, your first paragraph is pretty much a match for my growing up, other than my music experience was in public school, and I wound up switching to band because my singing abilities are just plain :censored:.

While I had not heard of Spinal Tap's version of a Christmas carol, I've known and enjoyed C&C and the Mackenzie Brothers for several decades; guess which two songs got the least air play on the two radio stations I listed earlier?

Very nice selections Sir...... I actually have the 12 days,Canadian style..... funny.....must listen..... lol

So I'm not alone in liking some of the off the wall stuff....

Thanks to all who've posted, and welcome to anyone else who feels like chiming in. It's great to know that I wasn't the only one trying to hang onto what little sanity I had this season.....

Now I feel kind of bad for my dislike of Christmas music and Christmas in general. This year marks 20 years of being married. My wife knew what she was getting into, but she's always been just a little bit disappointed in my lack of enthusiasm for tradition. We're not religious, and we don't like the abundance of useless crap that is constantly marketed to the public. I mean that describes both of us, not just me. My wife hates useless products. But she likes holidays. Our two sons, now 14 and 15, are a lot like me. They don't see much point in holiday observances, except Halloween. They like costumes and pranks.

Anyway, my wife's dad is in an Alzheimer's care facility in Springfield, about 50 miles from here. The three of them went to a party in Springfield for Christmas eve, then spent the night at the nursing home so they could spend Christmas morning with her dad. She called a while ago and said that she was sad because she keeps being flooded with all the old Christmas memories with her parents and from when our boys were very young. They were playing Christmas carols on the TV, and she kept hearing several of her favorites. She likes having lots of people around, and good food, and playing cards with the family.... but she doesn't do that any more. I'm not bothered at all by spending Christmas here by myself. I like it. And I haven't heard a Christmas song in weeks, which is even better. But I can't help feeling sorry for my wife. I always say that I try to enjoy every day, so holidays are a non-issue. I can't fake enthusiasm for holiday traditions. She truly doesn't have anything to complain about, but I guess she can't help being sad today because she remembers all that Christmas stuff she grew up with, and it's obviously over.

I'm sure our sons will never marry religious women, but still, even if they're not into what's referred to as the "meaning of Christmas" there's a good chance that our future daughters in law will have some sense of holiday tradition. Maybe some day in the future my wife will be able to indulge her urges in that way with new family members. But if they bring Christmas music into the house, somebody is going to be in big trouble.

Why do you feel bad? Before yours, there's a dozen posts from people who are, for the most part, completely over much of what goes along with Christmas. Personally, if I could disappear in mid December for a month, I'd be extremely happy...

I hear you man.... My wifes grandfather passed recently and she took it hard. Her grandparents where much like her parents. Her mom was a single mom raising 2 kids, working all the time. Grandparents stepped up to help. My wife was closer to them than her mom. Well, Ive named all my kids, and have never let anyone sway me on what the name would be. (Its a fathers job in my opinion) Well,my last son (born 12-13@ 5 weeks early) was born and when they asked for his name (to her), she looked at me in a clueless way. She had offered names I didnt like, she hated some of the names I had picked.... Well, to honor her, and her grandparents (g-pa was a war veteran), I told her/them his name will be Kiel Louis..... My wife broke in the happiest tears i have ever seen.... grandpa was Kie and g-ma was Louise..
You know what they say bro,......Happy WIFE Happy LIFE...

I like Christmas as far good food and drink
Meet family and friends and have a good time
Most of our Christmas dinners range from 20 to 30 of just family from 92 to 8 months

I just hate the useless gifts and crap u never use
This year most of the gifts were lollies or stuff we asked for
Some people wanted nothing and got nothing
Worked out good
Everyone knew what they were getting and wanted it
ended up being a lot cheaper as well
