If anyone is looking to upgrade their kt196cc go-cart or mini bikes, My brother and I own a little POWERSPORT small engine repair shop in Hamden CT email us at maycobrothers@gmail.com
Pickup and delivery service available.

We upgraded our KT196cc Go cart and got the top speed to get 40 mph. By just adding a high performance muffler, Air intake high performance filter and adjusting the jets. We did lose any power or acceleration in the process. 0 to 40 in 6 seconds and it still has so much climbing power, We tested it by riding it through woods and trails and it handles like a beast, Everyone looking to upgrade to the predator 212 but let me tell you that you don't need to, The kt196 is almost the same as the 212. I've been searching all over the Internet and haven't yet to find anyone who has gotten there kt196 past 30 mph. If you know anybody that has feel free to contact me and let me know I would really like to know if anybody else has gotten it any faster than that

More power to you. FWIW, I have 4 karts. Two are powered by predator 212cc engines and one has a clone 196. All of them hopped up a lot more than yours.
( Your engine is basically stock, what most people call a stage one ). They will all top 40 mph, but I really don't know by how much. They all run torque converters, and are geared for off road use. The point I'm trying to make is that there is no noticeable difference ( seat of the pants ) between the 196 and the 212's. The one cubic inch difference only represents about an 8% difference in displacement. If you already own one, no reason not to build it.

My home made kart has a 196 clone that tops out at 46mph. Home made exhaust pipe to an ATV muffler. Vm22 carburetor. No other mods. Governor has not been removed. The engine came off of an all power generator with a tapered shaft. Running with a clutch. 10 tooth and a 42 sprocket. After 36 or 38 mph it kinda creeps up to 46 in less than a half mile.IMG_20250214_205427186.jpgIMG_20250209_171157540.jpg

Got a grinder with a flaper disk. Started the engine and gradually milled it down checking it with the clutch or a 3/4" wrench. The keyway slot was done mostly with a grinder and cutting wheel then a drimmel tool. Had to trim the shaft, drill and tap. 4hrs total

Thanks. Wasn't easy to do that way, and risked destroying the crank. Threw the chain the first trial with the wheels off the ground. Grinded on it some more got the clutch to seat strait on the shaft. Torque converter on it now. No serious vibration no problems since.
