To get 36v 20ah, you'd need six 12v 10ah batteries. Two groups of three in series, parallel with each other. Serial wiring adds voltage, parallel wiring adds current.

To wire batteries in parallel, connect all positives together, and all negatives together. To wire batteries in series, connect the circuit's positive to the positive of the first battery. Connect the circuits negative to the negative pole on the last battery. Now connect all the batteries together taking the negative from the first one going to the positive on the second one. Continue this for however many batteries you have.

EDIT I just re-read your post- you need a series-parallel circuit to get 24 volts out of FOUR 12v batteries. Forgive the ultra-crappy, five-minute paint diagram, but it should get the message across.
