They're Australian 2 stroke lawn mower engines. They're quite powerful and have epic torque.

Being 2 stroke they're easy to modify for kart use and 3/4" crank shaft adapters are readily available. They're also very easy to modify for high power and monster revs, although there are no off the shelf performance parts for them.

Because they're lawn mower engines and literally millions have been made they're very easy to find for free, parts also cost next to nothing. Given the huge cost of other industrial engines here in Aus (the average price of a 6.5hp clone is $269) it's really a no brainer to use a Victa.

The one in that vid is a "Power Torque" which is the less desirable one, they aren't as powerful or smooth as older Victas and their design does not lend its self to high revs. Crankshaft adapters are also not available for these. They are however, very good lawn mower engines.

As a publicity stunt, in the early days (1950s) Victa used modified bases on their lawn mowers to literally cut down trees!

so will a powertorque on a 550 body with the right carb settings. I've played with them alot and they dont seem to cut grass any better at high rpm. Theres no torque up there...you can get them up to about 3600 governed but they seem to work better if you set it up for 3200rpm-ish

Those have the "extra power" motor, just a strait inlet and different jetting as far as I can tell though. Do yours have the squish band in the head?

They're governed to 4000rpm.

I've got a torque curve for the Power Torque on the lap top I can upload if you want, from the torque curve I calculated the maximum HP, I'm pretty sure it was some where around 3200.

Max power was 2.8hp (I think) haha Certainly feels like a hell of a lot more than that!

a few mowers not just 550s have the straight inlet, the bent inlet is just a packaging thing and does not seem to make alot of difference.
As far as i am aware the highest governed rpm you can get(assuming you have no airleaks anywhere) is 3600 with a green spring and a 4 ring main jet. But nothing has used the green spring for like 20+ years.... i use the yellow spring, standard 550 was red spring with 4 ring jet(3000rpm). There are 5 jets you can get. 4 ring jet is the leanest and gives the highest rpm, i now use the new 3 ring jet which seems to make engine pull better down low. They restrict the engines with richer jets and softer diaphram springs otherwise they are all the same(for an engine of the same age).

-when i mention rpm i'm refering to static rpm, they do spike higher than that on overrun. I've found you can get a bit more rpm if you use an adjustable diaphram cap off an old vc160 but i've gone off that as they realy do seem most happy at lower rpm.

dont think i've ever seen a victa head with a squish band and i've had about 30 of them...not sure they realy run enough compression to warrent having one either? altho i would like to do that one day for fun

Hmm next time I rebuild a carb I might pay attention to what jet and spring I put in LOL

Dont forget the gravel story sideways haha. What was it? Like a month running non stop in a pit of gravel. Ended up grinding it up into small rocks....Maybe it was agregate to fine gravel or something. Ah well, works for me as an engine

And I saw something on the net yesterday you both will find interesting, it was an original ad for some vintage minibike. And the victa option was advertised as 3.5hp.....Thats quite interesting, considering the 160's with a carb change are at least 5hp. It seems the 125 didnt have as much grunt unless heavily tuned.....which is rather easy to do lol

Do you have one of the high comp heads for a full crank? I remember you posting some photos of a wasp infested old auto drive and read the other day that they sometimes had the high compression heads.....wanna put a photo up if you do have one? haha
