How light is your kart

Any of you have the hassle of stuffing your kart in your hatchback or small pickup? have you lightened up the weight of your kart?
Any Kart Drifters out there?

I built mine to fit in my Subaru.
My Drift Kart was running, tore down for new mods, New Paint color scheme, anodized Red wheels and parts, Black Chrome Chassis.
it was last weighted about 93 lbs ,
I shaved another 9 lbs off it.
So should be low 80's lbs.

Running a mod Pred 212
angled motor mount
no Gov
Manual clutch
MTB disk brakes up front
Disk brake rear
drifting on HDPE plastic
Ratio is 5.1 , 12/62 great torque and control
max speed 32mph

LOL, PVC, that's less grip than HDPE, especially on concrete or asphalt for that matter.

But anyways SpeedAssault are you running the cast iron flywheel? PVL or ARC aluminum could save a couple few pounds.

oh, yes a live axle ofcourse.
funny that you mention, I am researching for a flywheel.
Any recommendations, facts on how to choose?

Also thinking how to mod into a Hemi, what are first steps on mods to engine: springs first , then connecting rod, then the cam. dunno???

Bone stock from the factory my Starbird was somewhere around 118 lbs according to this ad, but I don't have the bodywork or the full chain guard anymore, although the previous owner has added some extra metal and the original Tecumseh was probably a tad lighter than the Briggs, so it's probably around ~125 lbs.
With my ~110 lb self on it, it's about 235 lbs. total when I ride it, but with about 6-7 HP, it can really boogie!
I need to gear it down a bit and replace the old dry rotted front tires, but it can already drift like crazy!!
It's 1WD by the way.

Since you put up specs for your kart, here's mine.

Powerplant - 1985 Briggs 5 HP: upgraded Raptor connecting rod, no governor, header, plus it came stock with a high compression head!
Clutch - Old Max-Torque SS with 2200 RPM engagement, 2400 RPM full lock
Top Speed - 38 MPH at 5400 RPM
Acceleration - Barely enough grip, I can feel it barely hooking up when I floor it
Handling - Great turning right, not so great turning left
Gearing - 5.5/1 with 13" tires
Brakes - Scrub type, that actually work surprisingly well


This video doesn't do it justice, if it weren't for the fisheye you could see that it was drifting almost all over the culdesac! I think now that it's ungoverned it would work even better, but tuning issues keep popping up due to a vacuum leak.

Oh yeah. and as far as mods, check out www.gopowersports.com and look at their differently staged kits for Predators. Stage 2 would already be really fast, but Stages 3-4 are bonkers!

Upgrade the rod AND flywheel before you upgrade valve springs!! Many people have punched holes in their engine block because the rod fails at higher RPMS. Flywheels don't fail very often, but they can, and it can be catastrophic. ARC and PVL make great performance flywheels, but ARC 'wheels are a bit more pricey.

A slide carburetor would be a great upgrade, especially if you do any work on the cylinder head.

Upping the compression with a thinner head gasket is also a good idea, and it actually increases both power AND efficiency.

There are not very many choices, the two are listed above, just make sure the description says it fits the hemi, as the non hemi uses a different flywheel taper. And the flywheels usually have timing advance built in, so an offset key installed backwards might be needed , to retard the timing to more stock levels.

As far as mods, Ill leave that to someone else, Ill start an argument if I say too much

I built it to be a durable yard banger, about 3 years ago.

130lbs for the roller, 60lb for the GX340 clone, and my 180lb butt = 370lbs total

Still did donuts and skids on pavement , and will have over 20hp soon

And it fits in the back of my 08 forester, when I was driving that

I drive a 93 toyota quarter ton. Most of my karts I will pick the front up and set it on the tailgate then lift the back. The dingo is the only one I actually use ramps for. The tires add too much weight to the bacl end and the header is in the way. It's got the stock setup for tires and a gx160 with no governer and an intake and exhaust.

Probably around 180lbs, I can move it around easily. With me on it about 360lbs.....of course after a night of mexican food and a couple cups of coffee the next morning, 355lbs!!

Heavy enough I don't load them up, I just drive them down the street to a field everyone has been playing on for as long as I can remember. Helps I live in a rural town and I'm out of city limits.
