The electric starter on my 10 hp Tecumseh engine is shot. Unfortunately there are no markings on the starter housing at all besides "TECUMSEH" and "MADE IN THE USA", but after hours of research online I've concluded that it is a Tecumseh starter model #36680. I verified utilizing their parts guide (page 9) here:

As for the model number of my specific engine, I'm still not sure. I found the parts diagram for it using the John Deere web site (mow-kart was originally a John Deere 68 riding lawnmower). Based on hp and picture evidence, I think I have a Tecumseh engine model TVM220. Here is what I found in their service engines catalog, page 15:;

So, after much research and identification, my question is:

Since I need to replace the starter anyway, should I consider upgrading to a high-torque replacement? Is this even available for this engine?

I took the old starter apart to assess a potential rebuild, but the magnets were cracked and it just isn't worth it. I've already found new replacement ones online for $44.95 with free shipping:

I'm thinking that a brand new OEM replacement will service this project just fine, but wanted to weight others opinions on this before I purchase. I'm always interested in upgrading parts when they need to be replaced, and I had heard of others replacing their starters with better, high-torque models.

Thoughts?

Did you ever have a problem getting the engine to turn over with the regular starter when it was working properly? Most likely not since its a fairly low compression engine, I think you will do just fine with the regular starter. If you wanted a larger starter you would have to do a bit of jerry rigging to get it on.

Not that I remember. I'm sure it will be fine, especially with a brand new OEM starter. I always like to look into potential upgrade options though for any replacement part I need to purchase.

If the old one worked fine, getting an upgrade which will need fabrication work to get it fitted seems to be a waste of time and energy. Just buy the original part that will bolt right on
