Let's not forget double-clutching, hand throttles, or *gasp* MANUAL STEERING!!!!!
Three words- Hand Crank Starter.

I hardly see the point in power steering. The Plymouth is really easy to drive.

Same reason as many other technological advancements- "Convenience". (Read- "We know you're a lazy sod, so we just made this easier...")

Most other advancements are for "safety". (Read- "We know you're entirely incompetent, so we're going to try to save your @ss for you..."
