Hey, everyone! Newbie on the block. Just got the resources and ambition to build my own off road go kart. I found this site, while doing some research, and I find it helpful. I will be looking for advice from all sources. I'm currently pondering how big of an engine to put on my kart. I want power, but do not want to sacrifice speed. Would a 10HP engine be too much? Thanks!

Welcome! And as to your engine question, theres no such thing as too much power, and the gear ratio you're probably lokking for is around 5:1

I'm using a Briggs 6.5 HP for off road use and it works great. Tho, the governor is removed...

but hey, its much cheaper than a 10HP and it works great for me.

how big are you looking to build here?

Thanks for your input guys, especially on the gear ratio...I'll be sure to keep that in mind. As far as how big I'm looking to build. Well, my plans call for the frame to be 43"x72". Do you think it's a good idea to have a live axle with a jack shaft?
