Got my CCW permit

So I got my permit and I have been looking at guns for a while. I can't decide what I want though. I narrowed it down to two guns in 3 calibers.

S&W M&Pc in 9, 40, and 45
and
S&W M&P Shield in 9 and 40 (no 45 model)

I shot so many guns it is insane and I decided I like the M&P best. The only difference between the two is the thickness. The Shield is a single stack and the regular M&P is double. Other than that there are no significant differences.
Then I cant decide what caliber. I was thinking 9mm because its cheap and I can shoot for fun, 40 because its not as expensive as 45 but it hits harder than 9 a lot of times, and 45 of course because its an extremely versatile round when it comes to self defense. I have heard every argument about these rounds but I have seen the difference between them in real time. I am a US Navy Gunner's Mate so I know a little bit about guns. I guess it just comes down to my own opinion. Reguardless...

What do you guys think? What is your favorite gun to shoot or carry? What calibers do you like? Any experiences while carrying?

Can I please suggest the Glock 26 or 27 if this is for personal carry.

The quality difference is staggering between Glock and that S&W.

This is all assuming you can afford the Glock.

I'm a big fan of .40 cal. It has the power you need and if you've got a big boy job its not too expensive to shoot if you buy smart.

I'll be carrying a Glock 22 on waist and a Glock 27 as my backup on duty.

On a side note... if this is a small personal carry the Bersa or Beretta 380 is a great gun and the Bersa 380 Thunder is very cheap.

My dad has a Glock (22). I considered getting one. It's still in the back of my mind, but I absolutely love how the M&P fits my hand. My price range is around $500. I have gone to the gun store a couple times this week just to hold guns and look at them. The guy even let me try on different holsters with the guns to see how they fit.

For concealed carry look very closely at the G27 with a Mic holster. Obviously this is a sub compact frame, if you just want compact a G23 is smaller. Trust me when I say the 22 is a big gun to carry around concealed.

Gen 4 G22 & G23 frames have been redesigned a bit and have the Multiple Backstrap System. It allows it to adjust to your hand. I've got a medium grip on my Glock 22 right now.

Yeah, I wouldn't carry a 22. My dad uses it at his work. I'll check out the 27 because I don't remember shooting it. I'm sure I did, I just need to feel it again.

The MIC is cool but I cant see that being too comfortable or the gun being secure. I tried one of these and it was fantastic.

The Mic its great because it doesn't add a bulge to the side. I've had great luck with Fobus holsters for quality and comfort, paddle holsters are great and I've got to say what you liked to there looks really built for comfort.

I hadn't heard of that brand, I'll bookmark that.

I've had a CCW for 10 years now, I carry 2 Glock 23's which are .40, in my class one of the lessons that stood out to me were the real principle of "stopping power", the issue is not so much the caliber but hitting vital organs, we saw a video of 2 crackheads shooting it out with the LA swat team, they were riddled with bullets but stood there shooting for about 20 min because they hadn't been hit anywhere serious and they were too high to know they'd been shot

in movies when someone gets shot then flies backwards that is ridiculous, if the person would really do that, so would the shooter, that's simple physics

A very common topic to debate. The only issue with it that I have is sometimes people get the wrong idea about stopping power. Energy transfer is the main idea. If you have a larger round it carries more energy and its surface area transfers it in a shorter area than a smaller round. Sure, hitting vital organs would be the best shot you can make. I'm certain you could kill someone with just about any caliber round if you hit them in the heart, but are you always going to make that shot perfect? I want sufficient energy transfer no matter where I hit someone. If you are shooting 9mm, there is a greater chance of that round penetrating your target and doing very little damage as opposed to a .45, hollow point or not.

On the flip side of that, .45 is heavy, you carry less, and its more expensive. I think .40 meets in the middle nicely so thats where I am leaning right now.

I wish us northern folk could carry. I have handled the m&p, I would prefer the m&p to the glock. If you had the money I would go for a compact 1911. Maybe a officer or commander model. The price for the latter varies greatly. From simple to custom.

I would also recommend - Magpul Dynamics - The Art of the Dynamic Handgun.
Kosta really goes into detail for various techniques and situations. I havent seen all of the movies, but I have seen the other magpul movies, very good. A definate expert.

Just watched the video. I will be buying one soon for my Glock 27.

I also agree with the Magpul Dynamics video series.

As far as tactial shooting goes, I feel that it goes hand and hand with hapkido and krav maga. Learn all you can, I know I do.

Compared the G27-4 with the M&P40c today. They have the exact same form factor! From a couple feet back you cant even tell the difference. The only difference I could tell was the price, which was almost the same except the Glock I was looking at had night sights already. They are both nice and I like how you can use all Glock mags on the 27, save for the G36 I believe. I didn't shoot today because the wait for a lane was entirely too long and I left my range rounds at home. I'll make a decision between the two after I shoot. Maybe this weekend.

If you get a chance to fire the Glock 27 with the slightly extended magazine to fit the 3rd finger on the frame its worth trying. It makes a huge difference for stability on a gun that small.

Obviously on a subcompact gun we don't expect to have the same full frame feel as a larger gun, however the extension is very nice.

A .50 GI would be a good candidate if a Desert Eagle isnt you forte. They have it in a glock upper aswell. 9rnd mags too. Apparently a similar recoil to that of a .45acp.

I just need to do sustainment shoots. A couple rounds every once in a while. I'm certified as a department of defense small arms instructor.
