A "trick" with the mig welders, gas or no gas - start with 1/8" thick steel and crank the current all the way up, and control the weld puddle using the wire feed speed control.
Once you get the hang of the process, you can more intuitively adjust your welder's current settings for smaller stuff. That was the advice I was given years ago and I'm glad I tried it - I got the hang of it fairly quickly.
When you move the gun down the seam you are welding, make sure you're zig-zagging it side to side and "drag" the weld puddle with you. You get better penetration that way than just following a straight line.
