For this weekend's trip, I think I'll just leave the top slid partially open, might consider cutting that 3" hole in the lid and installing a fan to draw out the rising hot air for the next round

here is the sound test, sorry no video, didn't want to spend the time it would take to edit out parts of the film I didn't want in the video

well I do have a couple of blower fans from old hair dryers, I guess I could cut a quick hole in the lid so the fans suck hot air off the top of the generator, they can run directly off the 12V terminals on the gene, what do you guys think, would that be enough?

well it's what I have lol, I guarantee you won't be able to hear that fan over the generator, and overkill in this situation is welcome, plus I can always add the muffin fan later, the question is DO YOU KNOW THE MUFFIN FAN?

I do hate to cut a hole in the lid but the box just isn't going to work without it

and rain is in the forecast, so I might try to make a quick little roof for the fan too, so little time! however, I will take tools because I should have plenty of down time while we're there

Here's my opinion on it. I would set the gen on the ground. The ground will absorb some of the vibrational energy. If its setting on the floor of the box the vibrational energy is amplified by transferring the energy to the wood and then the sound energy from the air propagates and intensifies the sound waves. Try to take the lid off, place the generator on the ground and place the box over the generator. Provide weight to the box ti seat it to the ground to both prevent air gaps and to add rigidity to the walls. The walls will now transfer vibrational energy to the ground and the ground can soak up any amount of vibrational energy you can transfer to it. Its should be a quick & easy way to further dampen some of the noise. Let me know how it works if you try it.

I would even put ropes or straps over the box and use stakes to push the box in to the ground. The more you can transfer the vibrations to the ground, the quieter it will be. You can also just pile stuff on top of the box. Everything on the box will absorb vibrations and add weight to make it more "one with the ground".

There are 5 basic principles to noise reduction.

-Mass
-Mechanical decoupling/Mechanical isolation
-Absorption
-Resonance
-Conduction

We improved 3 of the five by doing the above so I'm pretty confident that there should be enough real world reduction in noise to justify giving it a try.

Unfortunately, you give him too much credit to do all this......he spent a week at Yellowstone without bacon and eggs....because he left them on the front porch when he left!!!!!

I still have faith in him if he remembered the beer

All he has to do is take the lid off, put the generator on the ground, throw the box over it and throw crap on top lol

there is no bottom, gene sits right on the ground

ugh, this sure aint gonna work. ran it with the blower for about 30 min, gas tank too hot to touch again, I shut down gene, can hear gas vapor coming out of the patch I made where the fuel gauge used to be, that is a recipe for a d@mn disaster

I'll have to leave lid open for now

Ok. Well it seems like your SOL for now anyway with the heat problem.

I have a design that should keep the noise down and provide enough air circulation to keep it cool. Let me knowif you want it. It is portable enough to fit your needs also if you willuse your generator enough to put more time and money into a new design.

Second morning waking up here in the woods. One of the coolest perks of my corporate job is being able to check out tech gear, so I'm using a Verizon MiFi to make posts like this one! It's also how I was able to post at Yosemite. The box, mufffler, and distance from our trailer is working out well enough for us. I still want to make something better when I have the chance.
