Feul filter for 5500 Generac Generator

Hey, I am servicing my brother's generator and I was going to replace the fuel filter but I have never done that before. I bought a filter labeled to fit the 5500 type on Generac generator which is the type i'm working on. There appears to be two fuel filters on the generator: one right after the gas line comes out of the tank, and the other after the control for the type of power output. Do these really need to be replaced periodically like the air filter, and if so, which one should I replace or should I replace both of them. Does anyone have pointers for that? (me being a newbe to small engine stuff)

Also, the filter I purchased is longer than both of the existing filters. Does this matter?

Yep... I usually buy them 10 at a time on a little cardboard backer from the auto parts store. They have stepped barbs on them for different size fuel lines. Just cut it back till it's the right size and clamp it on.

And with fuel filters (or any filter for that matter), the bigger the filter element, the longer it takes to clog up.

Sorry, I don't have any pics. So anickode is saying it doesn't matter about the type of fuel filter as much as the size of the line it's going on and to just go ahead and replace both of the filters on this generator (5500 Generac)
How do ya'll know when it's time to replace the filter? (The current filters on the generator are not clear, but the one I bought is a little longer and clear) I will at least try to get the link to the one I bought...

...so i'm bought this kit because I needed to replace the sp and af too. (for clarification)

I just change mine once a year, along with the oil, regardless of use. Fuel filter is so cheap, who cares. And even if you're not putting the hours on it, annual oil changes (combined with a monthly test run under load) help combat corrosion inside the engine due to condensation in the crankcase. This is especially important where you have large seasonal temperature swings and a lot of humidity.

ok, thanks guys! (So what I hear you saying is just change both of them cause they are so cheap and it doesn't matter that the new one might be a different size.)
