Engine upgrades....help?

It took me a few years before I felt I was ready to tear into an engine

Was that tear...( as in crack the case) or tear.. as in crying into it?

Pushing someone makes you a tool bag IMO.

People aren't comfortable right off the bat to tear into (yes....its the one that obvious), or work on an engine. Just like I was. Hanging around here for a while I eventually felt confident to do it myself. If someone tried to push me into doing it, it wouldn't have gotten done

Even MTNsleder hasn't cracked open an engine that we know of

Tecumseh engines are good engines. They just have finicky carbs. They even baffle the Masters around here and have gotten a bad rap.

If that's the case, and your skills aren't up to par (and that's ok) then just buy a new carb and save some cash.

There are a small handful here that fully support the diy mentality. The rest have joined the derp cult.

Adding to what WTR said regarding Tecumseh carbs, simple mods like governor removal, high flow air filter & exhaust are easy & cheap but, playing with the internals is another game altogether & Tecumseh performance parts are all but impossible to find...

I'm the first to say "fix what you have" but, sometimes, the time, money & effort simply doesn't make sense if what you expect from the existing engine simply isn't probable; those are the times when a $99 replacement engine makes sense; in all other circumstances, see my sig...

Predator 212, Honda Gx200, Briggs Cr950, Duromax, Champion 208, Briggs Animal. Way too many to choose from but options are nice.

That would also depend on your location; you can't simply go to harbor freight & pick up a predator if you're not in the U.S. can you...

No you don't buy another. You put it back in the box, pay a random kid $5 to start crying, and return it saying the engine has no compression and your kid's go kart Birthday present won't run.

But I've learned a lot about small engines and it's all because of the Predator. When I bought my buggy and joined here, I knew absolutely nothing about engines. Now I can at least call myself a novice.

The Predator Engine is what got me started. The Predator Engine is single handedly bringing back karting and mini-biking.

So get on your hands and knees, lower your head, and worship the 6.5 Horse Saviour while kissing each of his 26 hooves.
And stop trying to play those 45's on the MP3 player.

I have a Nissan 240sx. The engine doesn't run very well. I am thinking about dropping an LS1 in there. I can get it for next to nothing. What do you think?

Although I don't disagree with you, Bob, you just said it yourself, you ONLY have experience with Predator engines; how can you possibly know the potential of a Tecumseh or B&S engine? You can't possibly give an unbiased opinion on small engines because you are biased...

Some guys here will dis the Tecumseh because they don't understand or can't correctly tune the carb but, a bad carb doesn't equate to a bad engine...

I have or have had B&S (vertical & horizontal), Tecumseh, Honda & clones & the engines I had the most issues with were the vertical B&S, one now has a 3 piece conrod & it's replacement (which was used when I bought it) has a rod knock at high RPM but, does that bias me away from all B&S? No. There's a vertical on my push mower & a horizontal on my black kart...

Well said, friend. There ARE other engines, and I'd bet money a 5 hp. Tecumseh could whoop a rotaderp 6.5.
