engine question for a bronco need ASAP!

got a 87 bronco full size 5.0 v8 302 engine. the problem is its spraying oil like crazy and cant find the source. plugs are dry anti freeze is gone smells sweet in the oil dipstick. also its only on the driver side.

its been cranking hard for awhile. then today starter slipped and started having a high pitched metal on metal grind. think that has anything to do with it?

For starters- You say it's "spraying oil", yet you cannot find the source. I don't follow. If you can see it spraying, you can find the source, no?

Second- coolant ending up in the cranckase is dead serious. Everything from a blown head or intake gasket all the way to a cracked block.

Third- If your oil is fulla coolant, your lubrication is gone. Hello nasty sounds.

Fourth- don't just smell the oil, look at it. Is it really frothy? Look like chocolate milk, a milkshake, or something equally weird (and not oil-looking)? If it's any of the above, see previous bad news.

That's all you. It's up to you to clean everything off and figure out just where it's coming from.

Anti freeze is gone? As in you don't see any in the radiator?

High pitched metal-on-metal would be the pinion gear on your starter trying (and failing) to engage the ring gear, and instead, rubbing on the flywheel. Have you tried to see if you can turn the engine over by hand? Hopefully it isn't locked up...


Tell us what happened, exactly. Has the engine been acting up? Did the oil just randomly start spraying?

Well its spraying but only under pressure, that's way cant find the source. The only thing the engine has been doing to act up is a hesitation of wanting to die when you press the gas.

The coolant cannot be seen in the radiator and its bone dry. The oil only smells sweet but doesn't look like it has coolant in it.

The valve covers were loose awhile ago. The bolts could be tightened by hand that's how loose. Tightened that up and then a week or 2 later it started doing this. I will go out a little later and see if i can turn it by hand

Nope. I still don't get it. As long as the engine is running, the lubrication system is under pressure. So... Start the engine and lift the hood?

Curious if the block or one of the heads could have cracked through an oil galley and coolant passage, allowing oil to spray and coolant to run down into the crankcase. That would have to be one nasty crack. The only way to tell is to actually find the leak. We can't do it for you.

I am very familiar with these motors. Give me some more specific information.......

Is it "spraying" oil from the drivers side of the engine? There is a oil pressure outlet for the gauge above the oil filter housing.

If it is low on coolant, the easiest and most definitive way to find out if it has a leak and where it is---fill it up and pressure test it..........

The starter noise sounds like one of two things. Flywheel has damaged/missing teeth, or starter is junk and isnt operating properly. Easy to find out which one, if you want me to explain i can. Very doubtful the starter has anything to do with your other issues.

It sounds like this engine has had little to no care.

the engine has had alot of care. its just been runing crappy from the day after a head gasket change. found out the problem with the starter. it has a bolt missing and it had tilted so now it isnt fully contacting fly wheel

it is spraying actually spraying from the drivers side

you see, it really would have been helpful if you had mentioned the head gasket if the first place. You probably put it on wrong or didn't torque the head correctly.

You're not the only one...

So, if I understand you correctly,

-Your transmission isn't shifting correctly
-The engine is lacking power
-The bell housing is cracked
-Your coolant level drops with no visible coolant leaks
-Oil sprays from the engine

Get up under your truck and make sure the vacuum line running to the transmission modulator is connected. If it's unplugged, the lack of power and odd shifting would make sense.

As far as the cracked bell housing goes, time for a new transmission.

I'm perplexed as to why you run for help, then offer poor detail as to the full picture. Most of the problems aren't something that can be fixed by someone over the internet telling you what to do. You gotta do the legwork.

yea i know. i just forgot to add the other details. well i mainly just wanted to get the possible oil spray locations. the other things will be fixed in due time.

i found the coolant leak. the heater core is that problem.

i just need the thing drivable so my dad can get to work.

i said the head gasket change doesnt have anything to due with the oil leak... or meant to say that
