Hello all ! I am a big kid and get joy out of watching my son (8yo) do things that I never got to do as a kid. As an example, here is the Facebook post I did last night:

I'm sometimes unsure who the kid is.
Got a gocart yesterday, it's raining today yet Danny wants to take it for a ride. Honestly, I want him to also. So, long story short - of course he does. I tell him to keep it slow and not tear up the muddy yard - which he does. Then, I am feeling the need for speed so I tell him to floor it. Next thing you know, he's spinning and sliding, mud going everywhere. I signal to shut er down, he does and starts yelling 'victory lane'. Yep, my son who is a daredevil and a Kevin Harvick fan !
Still yet, not sure if he or I had more fun.

Anyhow, I picked up a Road Boss Code Red2, 650 XL with a basically brand new 212 Predator motor on it.


I usually search the web and forums and find the answers I look for - try not to bother people. My first upgrade I want to do is have taller tires. Basically to allow it to go through the woods without worrying about things a few inches high. Anyone with ideas on this ?

Taller tires basically equate to a steeper gearing....(more top speed, less take off power)... which may cause centrifugal clutch failure or shorten belt life on a torque converter....

It all depends on how it's geared now and how much taller the new tires are.

Welcome.
Taller tires will change your gear ratio, so you cant go too crazy without changing other parts too.

Agghhh. I actually thought it would be simple as putting on taller tires. What mods would be required ?

Welcome! I'm not familiar with your Kart, but the basic premise is to gear down to keep performance equivalent. A larger axle sprocket, or smaller engine/jackshaft sprocket will do the trick.

The current tires are 4.10/3.50-5, they have the 4 hole split rims 2 3/4" center bolt pattern.

The main thing is the sprocket is only about 1.5" off the ground, the body is 5". I would like to see about a 3.5" rise, so instead of the current tires being 10", I would like to see 16-18" tires. I think ?

Yeah....that could be a problem....see, with bigger tires comes the need for a bigger sprocket....now, with a dead axle and the sprocket right next to the tire...an inch and a half is pretty good clearance, but out in the middle, it can high center pretty easily.

Adding a jackshaft can allow you to keep a smaller axle sprocket ......but...we're still waiting on some pics of that axle setup...and we need a tooth count on the clutch and axle to advise ....
