Well drafting would be in my eyes because with welding your welds could possibly be keeping something major together.
Seriously, it's not a permanent tattoo.... you can change it later on, you've got years and years ahead of you (barring catastrophes or Second Comings).
Thats the way i see it personally, but the parents (especially mom) are kinda hinky about it which is understandable.
Pick one or the other, have fun, and don't worry so much about making the "right" choice.

If you do drafting, then the welding is all but useless.
not necessarily welding knowledge would benefit me because as im drawing something up i can think of how i would put it together.
As jam & devino pointed out, it comes down to what you see yourself doing happily & comfortably in 40 years time.
Having said that, I've spent 25 years doing physical, manual work & now, at 42, I wish I'd been behind a desk coz I'm falling to bits. Don't get me wrong, for the most part, I wouldn't change it coz I wouldn't be here if I did...
Really i think i could be happy doing both for the rest of my life. with that being said i think id rather do drafting as a full time job and welding as a hobby at my house building stuff i wanna build.
Welding as a hobby makes sense, drafting as a hobby doesnt that is the way i kinda look at it.
Welding professionally sounds fun now, but you and your health are going to be regretting it after 40 years of sitting in a tank burning rods and inhaling fumes for 40 hours a week.
isnt that the truth! but welders typically have a work schedule of a week on and then some time off to stay healthy. i also see your point though
If it were me, I would go with the drafting as a major. A good welder is a good welder is a good welder. Thousands of welders are hired and fired from all kinds of places every year. A drafter/ drafting engineer is a much valuable position to a company. Plus it's t shirt status all year man.

There are lot of big named companys that hire welding engineers. If you just want to be a welder, go to a tech school. I think old school drafting is a thing of the past, now everything seems to be AutoCad with 3D.
yeah i was accepted to a tech school and yeah everything has gone 3D in more programs than just AutoCad even though they are the best known. I have been working with AutoCad Inventor in my high school and have been told by my teacher i have to draw up my gokart with it when im done.
old school drafting has not died out though just so ya know!
Thanks for all the input, i really appreciate it cause all of you guys know what im talking about, my parents sorta know but since they dont weld or draft everyday it is kinda hard to talk to them about it.
