I bought this used KT196 for $50 along with a Neft Dog Retriever. The frames and bodies were in good shape. Mechanic just needed ro get ride of stuff …was just sitting at the mechanic’s shop, I decided to just replace the engine on the kt196 with a predetor from harbor freight. Installed w/o any issues, new brake and caliper. Hit the road and Jackshaft weld broke off. Research shows it’s a design issue. Second weld didn’t work either.
Suggested Ideas:
1: Replace Jack shaft with 2 pillow blocks, longer shaft to reach across ”fixed engine bracket”.
2: Add gussets to existing jack shaft for extra support
3: Add sprocket to other side under engine
I’m not a welder so I’m at their mercy.
There are a few guys waiting hook it up…whenever they respond

Idea # 1 is probably the most work. It will also give you the best results. There have been many people come onto this forum with drive train problems with the same kart. Seems like a common defect.

Thanks for your input. Problem is I’m not a welder…not yet. Hopefully I’ll hear from one of the local welders. He’s a race car builder and tinkers with karts and the likes.

Jack Shaft issue update
I my Coleman KT196 to the next welder. He can make it right if I remove the engine and bring the motor mount. He reminded my how he used to work on them as a child on the farm. Anyhow for to remove the engine would save me a lot of money. He’s the go to guy for our local race car enthusiasts. I chose him because his fabrication specialist. I should be riding by thanksgiving.

I'm not a welder either. More of a drinker really. I occasionally like to eat too. Did I ever tell you about the time I woke up in a ditch? Wouldn't have been so bad, but it was my in-laws ditch.

This never actually happened.
