you can, it will not hold up (maybe if you had a dewalt or etc, but then you wouldn't want to)

the rpms are wrong (not fast enough) and that means it will lack momentum, and be way more likely to damage the motor, a cheap saw will probably just burnup.

go to northerntool.com or harborfreight.com and look for a 4 1/2 grinder.. they can be gotten from there for under $20, or $30 for one from lowes, and they work well and you can get ALOT of different discs/bits for lots of jobs. they have cut-off, grinding, steel wire, wood saws, masonry cut/grind its a good addition to the tool box, and will cut most anything with a little patience and a steady hand. its still 100 times faster than a hacksaw, about 1/3 as fast as a chop saw, but unless your making more than one cart/project, a chop saw is a convenience (I have one, and use the grinder/ cutoff wheel half the time anyway for odd angles and compund cuts). the grinder will be nice when your done to clean up your welds too.

I personally would rather have my 2 grinders than my chop saw anyday, I have one for grinding and one for cutting (saves time playing with changing bits), I do lots of projects though, so having the chop saw and extra grinder is merely a time and nuisance saver.

if you are cutting square tube stock, get a small aluminum square (cheap at northern and HF, under $5 often) you can use the lipped side to track you line around the piece so you get good cuts that aren't angled or badly gapped (harder to weld)
