And you COULD put a PWC engine in the boat, if you're creative. The best way to DIY a PWC engine into a small boat is to source the donor hull as well as the engine, and cut out the PWC hull, from ahead of the water inlet all the way back to the transom. Then you literally graft it into the boat hull. This saves a ton of re-engineering as far as the water inlet, impeller tunnel and outlet nozzle setup are concerned. I have a fairly small boat hull kicking around that I've wanted to do this to for years, but never go around to sourcing the PWC.
