Hi

I am looking for an old cart to fix up or some detailed plans to get started.

i was looking on the Honda website at thier GXH50 4-stroke. Is this a good engine for gocarting?

i will endevor to read and learn alot before i begin a build, but any assitance would be appreciated.

Oh and i should mention, my tracks are dirt/offroad.

Thank you

David

Welcome to the forum David!! It is nice seeing another South African on the forum.

The problem with that engine is that it is only 50cc, and will not really be a good choice for a kart, especially in off-road situations. Something like a Honda GX160 or GX200 would be more suitable

:iagree:

But if you modified it, ie governor removal, custom exhaust and air filter, wouldn`t you get about 3-4hp out of it?

Well, maybe, but why do all (basically beating the crap out of a tiny engine) that for an off road kart, when you can just buy one that puts out twice that..... ? For less.....?

:welcome2: Dave! You will find all the info you need to be a successful kart builder, right here on this forum......:cheers2:

Thank you Firemanjim, i am so enjoying this forum and its only day 2.

Question: buying an engine in cape town, who would be a good supplier?
I would like to get the engine and learn as much as i can about it before i start on the actual cart frame. If i could get this engine humming nicely at home im sure id would learn alot.

There are several places you could look. I always check what is happening on gumtree and Junkmail first, You could buy one new from any industrial machinery shop too

Just keep what clutch you want to use in mind, because larger HP engines (8HP and above) generally have 1" output shafts. The clutches for these can start getting real expensive, especially for us in SA
