Can this axle be saved ?

The axle in question belongs to this manco. 3 options a I see it. Heat it and bend it back? Find a hex shaft replacement. Convert to round axle with new wheels etc. just picked it up today off craigslist. Engine started on first pull and 30 series looks to be in decent shape. It'll be a runner pretty soon.

You never want to heat an axle lolol, but beating it to death with a sledgehammer seems perfectly acceptable! I'd try to fix it, because converting that whole back end to round doesn't sound fun; but if it isn't solid when you straighten it then grab a new one lol

one could heat it.. if one was able to restore it's proper annealing state afterwards
in fact that'd be the ONLY proper way.
cold deformation is basically work hardening, which is nothing but asking for it to break the next time it's under too much stress instead.

So yeah.. uhm... difficult to do properly in your home shop IYAM,
getting a new one is maybe much less hassle;
but you can of course try to bend it back to 'buy' you some time
either to find a hex axle or building up the funds to convert to round axle.. whatever comes first.

What they ^^ said, that axle is basically scrap; shouldn't be too difficult to find a new hex axle...

My opinion based only on my experience.

Using a press without heat that shaft can be made fairly straight.

If you heat it, you made the job much harder. The shaft isn't considered heat treatable. I've got one, files easily.
But get an area heated cherry red and thats where it will bend and kink.

The only way to prove this is to let someone heat up a shaft and try to straighten it for a couple of hours. Once in a great while someone that's willing to listen comes along, they learn a valuable skill.

I put both of my round axles through the press. Granted they weren't bent like a dog's leg but I've had no issues so far.

Well, I'll continue to PB blaster that brake disc see if I can get it removed, and then ask around my buddys and see if anyone has a press. If I don't turn something up in a day or two I guess I'll have to buy something. Thanks for the counsel
