BMX as in cross? then get a 24" BMX bike..
BMX as in flatland? get a std 20" size. (I'm closer to 6' than to 5.9 and own a 20" titus flatland)

Good? Mongoose :D
Cheap, not really ;)

GT has some very nice bikes too,
a bit cheaper than GT would be Dyno;
if you can find a Titus bike get it (same quality as Dyno, much lower price)

If you want to do it right there's only ONE bike (for me) that does it:
Raleigh Burner (1982 or something) the best BMX ever made. (I miss mine :()

Cross it is then..

I've seen an astonishingly well made BMX (IIRC it was a 26" 24" at least) crossbike a few month ago in a shop (decathlon).
It was really cheap('ish) I think BTwin or something...

can't recall exactly but they dropped the price from around 350€ to 150€ because it was "last years color scheme" (Ja, sounds chinese ;))

Anyway, it was really well made as far as I can tell riding it a few feet around the shop.
I cannot tell how well it takes jumps, but for a price like that it's worth a try.
(And it was NEW for 150€...)
marzocchi front suspension (optional) and hydraulic disc brakes.
I noted the model name somewhere.. "double sinner" or something stupid like that,
I'll let you know
[EDIT]
Ahhh a little google later..."subsin double"
"subsin Klassik" without suspension
here we go:
http://subsin.btwin.com/EN/subsin-double.php
Usage restriction

Not designed for INTENSIVE dirt or park use!!!
Height : available in 24-inch & 26-inch wheels
Color : satin green / white
User weight : 90 kg maxi
Jump height : 2.5 m maxi

Nice!! peronally I think 26" is a bit large for a BMX, but the retro series is extremely cool :D

Couple guys in the local bike club have them.. They look very cool! haven't had a chance to ride or even sit on one yet.

If that's a little out of your price range..

Try:

Porkchopbmx.com

They make a great street/trail cruiser frame/fork.. you can build it up to your needs.. and still get the AWESOME old school vibe.

^Possibly scratch that, its been a while since I purchased from their site.. looks like they may be out of the "Landrace" cruiser frame/forks. Im sourcing a place to find them..

Still a GREAT place to get oldschool parts.. have ordered from them a few times..

A BMX shouldn't have suspension
(your arms and legs cushion the impact if you do it right ;))

And being somehow purist (the eighties formed me that way)
a BMX shouldn't be any larger than 24"

Lynxer.. may I ask..
Are mongoose really available for cheap in your area?
I mean the SuperGoose pricetag around here can easily reach a four figure number.
the stickerset costs like 40 bucks
a motomag hits $600 very easily... even in bad shape.
In good shape... well:

I have been offered 4 figures for the supergoose. Its in a crate in an undisclosed location... until my son is old enough to appreciate it (say 30? haha)

They are not cheap! and actually quite rare in this neck of the woods.

Ah okay, I was just baffled, since mongoose bikes are really expensive around here especially late 70s early 80s (as are almost all BMX of that era, that survived)
But thanks for the pics... great bikes!
you even have the original "lousy" brake calipers...
And I'm impressed that your rims survided all these years too.
(Hubs okay, but the rims.. I changed mine on a yearly basis back then)

But since gear monkey asked for a bike that
not break the bank
I think (although I'm afraid I started it) 80s Mongoose might not be the best option here :D
(as little as a Raleigh Burner :()

But according to vitalbmx even mongoose has some 'nice price' frames nowadays :D.

Yeah more of a collector bike. The last time I rode the supergoose I blew a side out of the OG gumwall.. lost sleep over it! it was packed up shortly afterwards. Someday It will see the light again!

Id lean towards searching your local craigslist.. find something you like and then ask questions about that bike. We can likely help you determine if it would fit your needs!

Although I never had a mongoose, their "size chart" is indeed a big help to judge if you fit on the bike or not.

according to that,
the upper tube length should be at least 21" for a person our height.
(you can get away with a 20.75" tube on some bikes)

So, if you can, ask the seller about said tubelength ;)
