I tried to figger a way to make it less perminent. Maybe pin it, key it, lock tite, anything.
in the end there was only one way. lt was junk anyway, nothing to lose. I'm curious to see just how long it lasts.
I thought about making a double D washer and welding it to the bell. Essentually doubling the thrust surface area. (Thicker) But that cuts the threads by that amount.

Im noticing people dont sell this stuff used. Why is that? Stuff just stays with the vehicle when its sold I guess?

I think you nailed it on the used speed equipment ( hop up parts ). I have built 10 or 11 of these things ( lost count ) over the last 6 years. 196's, 212's 224's a 301, and a 420.
All of them full of speed parts. Rods, cams, fly wheels, flat top pistons, SS valves, springs ect. I have boxes of stock parts that came out of the engines ( that I will probably just throw away some day ) but practically nothing of good stuff left over.
It's all in the engines. Also, don't think I have ever seen any good stuff for sale used.
Not at all like building a popular V-8, where you could build an entire engine from used goodies. Different market for sure.

So Ive come to the conclusion that a billet flywheel just isnt happening right now. Just too damn expensive. Maybe I could justify the cost if I could retain my charging system but Im not finding one of those. Anyone know of something I dont?

So the next best solution I came up with is getting a genuine gx390 flywheel, the older style, and keep the "blast sheild" that I made in place. Im comfortable with that. No danger to the kids, just the engine. Whatever, maybe itll blow up and I can put something crazy in there. Im learning a little bit about these Polaris engines... Hmm.

Anyway, you know how much a new, genuine 390 flywheel is? More than an ARC flywheel. Lol

I guess the goal now is lots more power and taller gearing to keep the engine speed down.

A word of caution, because I never thought of this until AI learned me yesterday... You CANNOT remove the GOV/increase power and add RPM to a 420 just willy-nilly like you can with a small block. LOTS more mass and LOTS more kinetic energy so LOTS more chance for their 'less than optimum' quality control to become apparent in the form of an exploded flywheel.

I was under the assumption that, the 212 Ghost spins a stock flywheel at 5k, why not the 420? Turns out that even the Ghost engine has an upgraded flywheel. Its not billet but its designed to spin faster than a stock 212 flywheel.

Who knew such a hassle could be so much fun!

That would be much appreciated but it needs to be the UT1 version. I can tell if I see it. Magnet is clocked about 2oclock with the keyway facing up.

I can say with confidence that at one time there was one within the confines of the MTL compound. What happened between then and now is blank.
I will continue the searching and let ya know if it turns up.

So I welded it very soon after and it lasted a lot longer but it wasnt a perfect fix. Its an acceptable fix. It still sticks engaged but now I can reliably 'unstick' it with a tap of the throttle, just as it gets to idle.

Forget these 40s though. Im going to get a 780 and maybe an FNR.

Is there any known reason to stay away from the clone 780s? I assume I wont even bother with the generic ones but if I can be convinced to save a few dollars...
