Adding new motor to my Christmas list

I got, what I thought to be a great deal on a Coleman 200. The previous owner had installed a carb and exhaust. When I went to get it, it wouldn't crank because the carb was out of adjustment. I got it for $100. Since I've owned it, I've adjusted the carb and installed 2 new tires (it needed them bad).

So today I rode it for about 20 minutes with no issues. It ran like a champ, fast and responsive. I decided to take it to the road and do a top speed test. With the throttle wide open it felt like it was being governed as it never got past about 26 MPH. When I got back to my driveway it shut off (first time since I adjusted the carb). It was low on gas so I filled it up, made another carb adjustment and decided to test it in the yard this time (less to push if it dies again).

It died alright, just not in the way I was expecting!

Are you alright, Friend?
If you lose that jackshaft plate thing bolted to your engine, you might double your speed by using a longer chain and direct drive.

That is a mighty big hole in that crankcase! Glad you didn't have to walk far. That motor looks like it has been through a lot.

It had / has oil in it. I didn't change it after I bought it, but a dipstick test looked fine. I parked it with a oil pan under it. I'll eventually take it apart and see exactly what happened.

$100 for a complete running (or running-capable) minibike is still a steal even though she was not long for this world. Parts is parts and you have the carburetor, the header and whatever else you can scavenge (fuel tank?) plus the whole rolling frame.

Is this a Coleman CT200U-EX? Those, if I have the ID correct, have the wide shock absorbing fork, headlight, fake teardrop fuel tank with interior storage and basically emulate the look of a Baja Warrior.

I see things just like it for $100 but they have no engine and have been picked over like a roadkill. Wheels and tires in any condition are a bonus from the local crackheads.

How high are you revving it?
All the way, lol.

The governor spring wasn't installed. I'm not sure if that's standard with these VM22 carbs or if he thought he was deleting it, or what. In my yard, I can only get to about 25 MPH before I have to brake / turn. And that's why I'm thinking I did the damage on the road since it drove so well in my yard. Once it reached top speed, it felt like it was being restricted by the governor. And when I tweaked the carb, I put a 115 jet in it. I guess I was sending too much fuel.

Yep, you're right about the model #. I put the new tires on, so now I'm about $170 into it. The faux gas tank was missing when I got it. And the headlight was missing but he gave me some aftermarket LED light that could be made to fit where the original went. The only issue is it has a 4 prong plug and the bike only has a 3 wires for the light. So maybe it'll work, maybe not.

Right now, I think what I'm going to do is look for a Predator 212 or 224 and put it on my green Baja bike. Then I'll swap the motor from that bike to this Coleman. The better bike gets the better parts.

It was being restricted by that gear reduction jackshaft assembly bolted to the engine. I'll bet it sounded like an airplane just before it went BOOM.

I don’t know the gear ratio of the jackshaft bikes but despite the fact it is a ho-hum fixed ratio, the *jackshaft will get you there* and won’t eat a belt when you’re 5 miles from home. I wonder if anyone in the hobby keeps the jackshaft intact (or intact but tweaks the tooth count) on a performance-minded build? Performance doesn’t always mean the road to Mach 1. Jackshaft gives you a better hole shot, bottom end torque but the top end is strangled a little or a lot. Just pontificating…..

How high are you revving it?

Reminds me to put a tiny tach on everything I own. Without that, it’s just subjective or “by the seat of one’s pants”

That jack shaft needs to be there for the chain to line up. Why do people always want to delete stuff they absolutely need? Is it just so they can supply us with the projects we need so we can make them running toys again?

Josh, save the charging coil and flywheel from that engine to possibly adapt to another engine. Maybe even the rotoderp.
