    340 Rotax Kart - Done

It did get finished, the kids were scared of it, I bombed around on it for a bit - then it sat in my drive shed. The last time I went to ride it, one cylinder had no spark. I pulled the mag and something got in there and mangled the one point set. At that point I made plans to pull this set up...

    Rotax 537?

And they do work! A month or so ago, I bought some rims and tires from a guy selling some of his spares to use on a new kart I am building. These were off of his midget outlaw sprint race cars. What do these cars run for an engine? Old free air sled motors with a centrifugal clutch put on where...

    Rotax 537?

I've got a kart with a 340 free air engine, behind a seat; never once overheated. I run a little rich, and a little extra oil, and as much timing advance as the stator plate allows. No problem ever. Keep in mind that 2 strokes are pulling ambient temperature air in through the crankcase at all...

    Eletronic clutch?

The clutch I was playing with is off of a mower, an electric clutch to engage the deck. I would expect these to operate just fine if slipped - they have a 5-6" dia steel friction disk not unlike an automotive clutch. I think you are talking about a torque limiter here. These don't slip at all...

    Eletronic clutch?

I had considered this, and did a little experimentation. Then when I tried to run the clutch on an old 11HP B&S, there was not enough juice to engage the clutch. So you are correct, you'd have to employ an engine from a mower that originally had one of these things on it...

    340 Rotax Kart - Done

I'll get to it :) All I've got is my wifes camera that can take a small vid, and I've never made a vid with it. Forget about uploading it on dialup. Me making a little vid could consume over an hour :( Plus I've only got about 1 night a week in the summer that I can devote to "fun" work like...

    340 Rotax Kart - Done

Well it started raining again halfway through mowing my lawn tonight, so I thought I'd drag the Rotax kart out of hibernation and get a few things finished up. I got the new rod ends and threaded rods for the steering fabbed up, put the seat back on, welded up the broken brake pedal, put the...

    Scrapyard engines?

I go to scrap metal yards regularly, of which there are 3 within a 20 min. drive from me. I have to use great will power to leave some of the stuff laying there. Some examples of scores: Cent. clutch from Honda 200M ATC - $4.00 Honda GX390 1" shaft, on a pressure washer cart - $15.00 (runs!) 11...

    Homemade clutch?

Do not use a worm gear box, if you do, you will not be able to coast after letting off the throttle. You can drive a spur gear with a worm gear, but you can not drive a worm with a spur. If you use a worm gear box, the minute you let off the throttle, your rear tires would lock up. If you doubt...

    Axle setup questions.

Bighead, Mcmaster Carr has a wide assortment of U-Joints available. Many different bores too. IIRC, you can even get them with different bores on each end.

Magnetic clutch? Potentiometer/Resistor bank? DC voltage control question

Well it looks like the old 11HP Briggs on the kart does not have enough juice to engage this clutch. I did a quick google search and it looks like 3 amps is all the power the alternator in an old briggs puts out - not enough... I'm going to keep this idea in the back of my head for now and just...

    Homemade clutch?

I've got something experimental going on with a magnetic clutch used for driving a mower deck on lawn tractors. You can follow that thread in this section and see if it works out. If it does, it will be an exceptionally powerful, nearly free clutch. I've got 3 of these things and haven't paid a...

Magnetic clutch? Potentiometer/Resistor bank? DC voltage control question

Anderkart, thank you very much for all those suggestions - I'm just not an electrical type of guy:). The switch idea will work for my kids kart as I've already determined that due to the transaxle's very low 1st gear, you can just shove the thing into gear and roll off with no burnouts. You can...

Magnetic clutch? Potentiometer/Resistor bank? DC voltage control question

I've got a kart on the go for my two boys, it's based on lawn tractor parts, and I would like to utilze the magnetic clutch that originally sent the power to the deck. I played with it using my battery charger for power, and I noticed that when powering the clutch using the 2V trickle charge...

    340 Rotax Kart - Done

I doubt it, not enough traction, and the weight of the driver sits far enough forward that it's not really back heavy. All that engine and clutch stuff doesn't weigh all that much

    340 Rotax Kart - Done

Thanks for the compliments, I'll post when I can! I'm glad you like the set up, it truely is easy - weld the subframe on, and then simply bolt all the stuff back on the subframe. I've got quite a collection of engines that need karts under them at this point. I seem to enjoy building these...

It'll be done soon :) I'm currently working on another Kart - also almost done!

    340 Rotax Kart - Done

Getting pics online is a PITA for me, I'll see if I can find a better pic that's already uploaded. My caliper is even flimsier looking than yours :). Mine is a cantilever style, with a pretty decent mechanical multiplier design in. I have no issues at all with braking. Like I said there is a 2:1...

Scarriest **** that has ever happend to you on a go kart

It was fairly dry compost, lots of leaves and stuff mixed in. I got by with some accumulation of coffee grinds and minor unidentifiable black material. It all brushed off easy :).
