Newbie with Questions (clutch and drive ratio)

Mine has right at 10* of caster and it lifts the rear inside tire as well, this should help with turning and the live axle. Hope to take a test ride by next weekend.

Most of the tubing is thin wall. The engine mounting plate is aluminum. It's not a light weight, but with 13HP is should do ok.

Newbie with Questions (clutch and drive ratio)

I've been promising to add pictures. I work 12 hour shifts and work on this thing after work and on my days off. I finally took some time to upload the pictures. I still have a little ways to go. Have to figure out a throttle cable for the Mikuni carb and twist throttle. Haven't installed the...

Not a bad idea on the adjustable sear mount. I already finished chassis and seat. No adjustment. I just finished tho motor/jackshaft plate of course I made that all adjustable. Never even thought about the seat. If this is fun I will build another one.

    Anyone have this bender???

I have that bender, but I had them swap out the square die for a 1" round. Only use D it a couple times. I welded a mount to my welding table. Takes some effort to get the bend started. Can't compare it to a "real" bender.

Newbie with Questions (clutch and drive ratio)

Oh trust me I have my share of scars. I'm not a youngster (46) and have done some dumb things. I am lucky to even be alive. With that I have learned a lot. I don't plan on testing my luck too much, but if it doesn't scare you s little what fun is that. I think this thing will be fun. If not I...

Newbie with Questions (clutch and drive ratio)

So you would gear higher ( numerically), to limit top speed? Or so it would have more low end? As far as tipping over one has to be smarter that the stool they're riding. I don't plan on racing around corners at high rates of speed I just wanted to build one for a long time. If I can pull a...

Newbie with Questions (clutch and drive ratio)

Ok I have my jackshaft made and mounted. I also have more gear ratios than I know what to do with. What gearing is a good place to start. I can pretty much cover any and everything. I assume 5500 will be max for a non governed gx390 with that in mind 5:1 should put top speed about 35 @ 5000...

    DIY fuel tank?

Those mini kegs make great gas tanks. I used one about 10 years ago for a Kawasaki Ninja ZX600 powered quad I build. Mounting them is the hardest part. I made a couple different mounts before I settled on this one. It is threaded rod with rubber hose covering it. I was able to really secure it...

Newbie with Questions (clutch and drive ratio)

Correct. Here is exactly what the response to my question was: 3/7/2014 10:11:27 AM "The clutch is model AX-4056 made back in 1986-90 range. The clutch appears to have aftermarket external stall speed adjusters. Assuming there are no internal modifications the clutch will engage at about 2000...

Newbie with Questions (clutch and drive ratio)

The axle clutch above was made by Horstman back in the 1986 - 1990 range. They said it will handle the power of the gx390 and was originally designed to engage about 2000 rpm. I will hang on to it for a future project. I already have a clutch and sprockets on the way. Getting parts together to...

Newbie with Questions (clutch and drive ratio)

True but they do make a 10 tooth sprocket. Also there is nothing saying it can't be off the end of the shaft.

Newbie with Questions (clutch and drive ratio)

Ok I will look into making a jack shaft. I should have most of the stuff laying around other than sprockets. I will search here to see what type of setups people are using.

Newbie with Questions (clutch and drive ratio)

What options do I have as far as clutch/gearing? The Hilliard extreme, is supposed to have overload protection. Once I have my hands on it I will see if i can modify it to accept a smaller gear. Are you suggesting a TC? It's not out of the question. I'm just worried it will feel mushy. Yes...

Newbie with Questions (clutch and drive ratio)

Thanks for your input. Looks like I'm limited due to the tire size, but on the other hand the tire being shorter should also help with the lack of gear ratio. i'll have to give it a go and if I have to modify it later I will come up with something, I would think this engine would have enough...

Newbie with Questions (clutch and drive ratio)

Rear tires are ~10" tall typical race kart wheels and tires. I have a 40 and a 54 tooth sprocket on the way along with a 14 tooth clutch. #41 chain set-up. I found an online calculator and it looks like I can keep the RPM's down to 5000 and still reach 40+mph which is probably more than enough...

Newbie with Questions (clutch and drive ratio)

Hey Guys, I have been lurking on the site for a while. I have read all the stickies that I think apply to me and still don't have the answer to my questions. Very cool site by the way with lots of good info, hopefully I will be able to add to it in the future. I'm building a motorized "bar...
