New to forum. Grandfather has older go kart in his shed that I have always wanted to fix up and take for a spin. Any ideas on places it would be ok to ride near Roselle or Bloomingdale Illinois?

Anywhere you can is the answer. Get on Google Maps or similar and hunt around for wide open spaces, abandoned places, abandoned mall parking lots or even empty parking lots of places that aren't open on weekends.

Putting the kart [heh] before the horse there a bit, aren't you? Get the kart running and worry about areas later. Let's see Grandpa's kart when you get a chance.

What is at these coordinates? Looks like someone's been having some offroad fun there.

41°57'59.0"N 88°12'45.4"W

Copy and paste it into Google maps or the map of your choice.

Anywhere you can is the correct answer! You could make friends with a land owner also.
Thats a tough one if you dont know the person. It ALWAYS leads to the same childish excuse, "the insurance company will make me sue if anyone gets hurt".

Ive heard that one since I was a kid and literally just got told that a few months back.

One guy though. ONE guy was decent and let us use his extra lot next to the cemetery he owns. Just have to be respectful if someone comes to morn their loved one that died in 1700 lol.

There’s that relatively new adage, “It's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission" (sounds like it’s a century old). Keep that in mind as you go karting where you don’t have permission. Aside from that, I can ride all over my subdivision in a kart or minibike and have never had trouble. Of course I’m not riding at 2am or otherwise being more obnoxious than my open header already is …but I finally started using a Briggs hot dog muffler/spark arrestor because even I found it tiresome. Toned it down like 50% or something.

I found a few secluded parking lots to ride my kart on Sundays. I never asked anyone for permission because I assumed they'd just say no due to liability issues, but I soon got bored just riding around all by myself so...

Then I posted wanted ads in my local craigslist and soon found serveral others in the same exact situation as me.

I got 2 replies to my wanted ads:

My 1st reply was from a group of like 10 guys that rode & raced karts on a parking lot behind an old vacant shopping center in my town.
My 2nd reply was from a group of like 30 guys that raced their karts at a track one of the guys had built at his large acreage just outside of town.

Craigslist doesn't have a dedicated Gokart section, so I posted my wanted ads in a couple of the most likely alternatives; then I included the following keywords at the bottom of my ad (gokart, gocart, kart, cart) so folks that used the craigslist search window would find my ads no mater in what category or how they spelled the Go Kart term.
