    Mario Kart Update (aka DuroPower)

He has a weird linkage with lots of springs at the moment that almost works. He needs to grind a little relief on the plastic mount so it will idle/close properly. I won't have it out of storage until spring, so pics will need to wait. The exhaust is all mild steel tubing, not EMT. It is...

The exhaust was all his idea. All four cones are functional. The splice is pretty rough, but I let him take the lead to keep it moving forward. He got a quick lesson that fab is nowhere near as simple as he thought. I think he used VHT, but I'm not sure. It likely has 20-30m of runtime and...

    Mario Kart Update (aka DuroPower)

We were slowed down by a move and lack of workspace, but he had a trimester worth of small engine class that gave him time to "finish" it. It's not quite to the level I would do it, but considering it was supposed to be his project, he is happy with it and just wants to be done and move onto a...

It has been long in the works, but nearly done now....and very loud. More details to follow.

Funny you say that, we have discussed it. The housing market is so crazy right now, I have no idea what we will end up with. Sadly, the most promising prospect today is a custom built home in a golf estate with an HOA......definitely less go-kart friendly than even our current neighborhood...

    Mario Kart Update (aka DuroPower)

As always happens with our projects, this has gone off the rails.....again. Wife got a new job, we decided to move, put house on market and son broke off the exhaust bolt in the head. A couple attempts to weld a nut to it have not worked. I was hoping we would have a window between selling...

Yes, they asked what the ground clearance was and decided it was too high. They also indicated race carts have bumpers, spec tubing, etc. He did offer I take it over for a tech inspection, but guessed it would not pass. The track is about an hour away, so I don't like the idea of running it...

Oh, and unfortunately running it at the nearby track is out. They say anything other than an actual race kart is just too easy to tip. That leaves us to find a good spot for testing.

Tacked on the straight sections before the rear cones and welded up the seems on the cones. Since I got my 1/16 electrode and filler rod, I played with amperage and pulse while welding the cones and was pretty satisfied with the results without using any filler rod. I am surprised how much...

Oooh, I didn't consider the motor movement for chain tension as it is also applicable to our kart. If we do support the exhaust off the motor vs the frame, that problem takes care of itself. BTW, your kart is krazy ;-). I may have to take a closer look.

    Mario Kart Update (aka DuroPower)

It's starting to come together - We are debating hanging it with a strap supported off the rocker cover or holding it up with something on the rear axle. My son made a new lever for the throttle, so he just needs to relocate the cable now. Also looks like our local track of Danica Patrick...

Think I am gonna be just fine. I went a bit overboard sketching this out, but flattening the 1-1/4 and cutting the sides off the 1.0 worked well. The 1.0 is even .110 wall thickness, so I have no breakthrough issues with the MIG. The 1-1/4 is only .090 wall thickness, so I need to allow...

Getting closer. I am pleased so far. Only a couple tacks & cuts to get to this point. This pipe is massively thick, so I am not too worried about welding it, even with my MIG. I am still debating the 1-2 transition, but I now I have plenty of tiny sections to do some tests with. If you see...

I know it is hard to visualize a 3D shape in 2D, but this is the rough layout I am planning for the exhaust. Disregard the oversize straight pipe, it is just there until I cut the longer one. Essentially the header pipe splits 1:2 and drops from 1.25" to 1". The left side pipe does a U turn...

Thanks guys. I can really tell I will enjoy learning TIG. It is just the type of challenge I enjoy. I may never get great at it, but the goal is a nice smooth weld. Using a foot pedal is a real change and it amazes me how you can really control the arc & heat with just the pedal. Welding...
