    Honda gx160 starting problems

I’d bet the ignition coil is dying. I’ve had a few lawn mowers do that, but they would die after about 15-20 minutes of running. Once the engine is cut off, immediately pull the spark plug and see if you have spark.

I’m talking about shortening the header so the muffler doesn’t hang so far out the back of the kart. I don’t think of a single cylinder engine having a “header”. It’s just a piece of pipe to me. Sorry for the confusion. I’m not chopping anything out of the muffler. That’s above my intelligence.

A muffler showed up today, it’s a motorcycle muffler with a bolt in restrictor. 1.5” inlet. I just stuck it on the pipe and it tones it down wonderfully. Noise is down to hot rod level, not top fuel ear death. I don’t notice much sound difference with the restrictor removed vs installed. If I...

I’d just like to tone it down some, doesn’t need to be Cadillac quiet, but the Ramcharger loud can’t stay. I was thinking something like a motorcycle muffler. I don’t think I’d notice a minor performance drop, went for the first ride yesterday, this thing is a rocket now. It spun the tires on...

Something else, is there any kind of muffler that flows good and isn’t horrid loud? The straight pipe is deafening, lol. My neighbors are ok with my engine shenanigans, but I like to be somewhat decent on the racket.

Well, finally checked valves, exhaust was too loose, watched it skip right over the compression release, tightened It down to a tight .004”. Three pulls and it was running. I treated it like a brand new engine, run around 2500rpms for 20 minutes. I’ll drain the oil in the morning and put the...

    Will do.

Well duh, ain’t a hot rod if it ain’t a pain, lol. Done a little rooting around, I may have the exhaust valve lashed too loose and the comp release won’t work. It’s at .006”, I’m going to try .004” and see if that’s easier to pull.

That’s what I figured, it still has the stock cam, so no help there. I’ll pop the stock key back in and see if that helps any, if not, I’ll hook up the electric start and try that. If that don’t work, I’ll put a stock height gasket back in. Thank you

Got the engine back together. I put an .018” head gasket in vs the stocker and an 8* key. I cannot pull start this engine, once it’s on compression, the cord won’t hardly budge. I pulled the spark plug and everything turns super easy. Is this normal?

I’m there on the ocd. Have head and main studs on an engine that’ll never see 6k rpms. Ain’t coming apart though, lol.

The key blocks the washer, not the nut. That nut isn’t cranked down either, if it is, the bearings get torched. And yes, the pins should be replaced at any bearing repack or change, but they’re usually changed when their bent over and then snap. Anyway, was just wondering any ill effects of...

I am asking about the bolt itself that the oil sensors wire goes through. Weld the open end shut on the bolt itself, then reinstall with the nut to hold it in place. I see where you’re coming from, if I’m going to have shrapnel to remove from the shelf removal, what’s some metal shavings. I...

Thanks guys. I watched the video, glad to see the same stuff applies here as the v8s. I ordered a rod, flywheel, valve springs, stage 1 kit, carb adapter piece for the air filter horn, side cover gasket, and a couple advance keys 4-8 degrees, and .018 head gasket. I’ll see how this does before...

Why a longer rod? is it to push the piston more towards zero deck or to help lower piston speed? Usually longer rod means a new piston to match due to compression height, bad bad news if you get it wrong. Was hoping to keep with regular or maybe mid grade gas, hence no mention of a thinner head...
