I don't even see how you would put a clutch on it.....the shaft on that thing is really short from the looks of it

New crankshaft anyone? Haha.

Some are cut off because half the guys in the world don't have a 3 jaw puller to get a rusted pulley off or so.

If it's tapered, even worse. I know a couple guys up in 4 cycle who I've gotten really clean and unused 5HP sidecover/crankshaft "kits" offa if you need help finding one.

Nothing under .996, remember that.

thanks for all the input guys. I bought this engine as a "clunker" I guess haha. I have 2 spare crankshafts lying around here as well. I am gonna be replacing the head, differnt piston and rings (or new rings?) and a valve job. So far between the engine and the gasket set and a honing tool i have spent 80 dollars. So i have 40 dollars left on my budget and i have almost every spare part for this engine besides the block so lets hope the cylinder isnt shot. I can get a clutch for around 26 dollars on ebay. I have a 5/8" clutch here but all my crank shafts are 3/4" should i buy a 5/8" crankshaft?

Sorry for all the questions, Any replies are greatly appreciated

hmm, looks like replace the head, replace the crankshaft, wind the starter up and itll be about good to run. after that start tuning it up..good luck with it man. it looks pretty beat up lol, but if you got a little time and knowledge youll make it work. buy

i would say buy a 3/4 clutch. its a little more common, plus its a little less expensive then the 5/8 crankshaft is on ebay.

Here are the other items i have bought
GASKET KIT
HONE
CLUTCH
The above clutch is the clutch im am looking into buying. Any cheaper ones?

where in ca are you located? and the clutch looks like its priced pretty reasonably. if your getting the gasket kit you dont need a new diaphram it comes with it. the gasket is included. also comes with the correct "washer" the spring should still be in the other one, if not you might need to get one.

if it was me with that engine, id get it home and :

remove the head, swap it out.
fresh sparkplug
possibly fresh sparkplug wire
remove carb, clean the hell out of it
change the gaskets on it, on everything for that matter.
reset the fuel/air mix screw
swap out pull starter or fix it (simple)
change oil
get some of that tank de-ruster stuff ( i forget the name ) or swap it

i know you proabably already know all this stuff and most likely will do it all, i just figured id still say it lol

Some of those older briggs were designed with double bushings on the crank. So you may need to get a new sidecover if you want to use some of those newer cranks.

thank you guys for all the input. i just talked to the guy on ebay and he said he has never removed the head he just pulled the plug and it stripped, but what i dont get is why are all the head bolts part way out? Im going to check for spark and compression first then from thier i will do the carb and tank, rewind the pull starter, split it all apart to the bare block change the crank shaft and make a new flywheel key out of a bolt. I think i'll keep the governor on it and i will paint it too. Install a use piston and rings and slap a coat of paint on it tune it and i should be set. I want this puppy running strong. Once i recieve the motor and the parts i will post pics of the whole restoration progress.

yeah if the engine gets caught up on something and stops suddenly the key will shear so the flywheel dont crack and fly off. the key will sheer make sure you get a aluminum key.

thanks for the info i know they are like 1.29 but i think i can just make 1 out of a bolt plus it will be slightly advanced timing right? And no thanks eagletalons i have a spare head thanks for the offer. I will most likely get a new key if i damage the one on this old piece of trash. My goal is to make is look nice and run very good. My next question is, i have a 5hp briggs motor rebuilt around 35hrs ago but it only like to run rich why is that?

like everyone is saying..spend the 1.29 and buy a key. they are cheap. your going to be making a "key" out of a steel bolt, its not going to shear like the aluminum will. plus your going to advance it seven degrees or so, so its "tuned" i dont know if you can get that kind of accuracy with a homemade bolt key. your already spending money on honing tools, rings, gasket sets, your doing everything else right..

not the rings... I have a spare piston with rings that had pretty low hours on them like 20 total
