Predator 5000 RPM without removing governor?

Is this correct? Anyone watch this video? He has a couple videos up, but, I'm curious to know if anyone has any experience? This has to be better than disassembling motor to remove governor. And safer.

I think it's obviously plausible, but it still dresses the gov gear... Which we know will let go about that or near that rpm...

I haven't tested my other motor with this gov mod yet... Was thinkin I might when I get it running.

Personally, I don't think it will let go at 5000.
IMO the reason it comes apart is because the gov lever gets moved.
When the lever is moved too far, it no longer holds the internals of the gov in place, allowing the assy to travel up the rod further than it was intended, and that force sends the gears and all off of the rod, and into the works.

I'm guessing this will get around 4500-4800 rpms. Not 5000 RPMs.

I've been flogging my dingo now for months with the governor still intact but not hooked to the carb. I have a cheapo tach and it will hit 6k sometimes. 5k all the time.

I beat the crap out of a predator with the gov mod. Even went as far as putting a 14cc head on and switching to alcohol. Never had any gov problems.

I know i'm hard on equipment, but the gov mod predator was a special case. I was trying to break it to prove the gov mod was OK or wasn't.

Very simple comparision actually:
removing the governor while everything is intact, only costs you minutes of your time and
causes no harm.
Removing the governor once it shattered will cost you nearly twice that amount of time,
and maybe a handfull of new internal parts.
Worst case: a fresh cylinder block (i.e. a new engine) and a trip to the hospital

Taking the risk might sound brave; but is in fact just lazy and dumb.

Anyways.. your engine, your call.

I respect your opinion on this sid, but there are a lot of people that run the crap out of them setup exactly this way at racetracks in predator classes. After actually trying to break it and not being able to I have no problem saying it'll be fine.
Take that for what it's worth, I mean it's just my experience with it, and not regurgitating what I read on the internet.

that's where the "taking the risk to save time" part of my previous comment kicks in

Again, I don't mind anyone blowing up their engines, why would I.

But still, and this is utterly important in a forum like this:
"It's BAD ADVICE!"

Why would you do something incorrectly when something like 5 minutes
is all it takes to do it right and just removing the plastic part from the engine that might fail at higher rpms?
and frankly.. sooner or later it'll give.. maybe not within weeks, maybe not even months...
but as soon as you forgot about that part it'll kick your behind

And the worst of it all:
"everybody" knows that keeping the governor is not a smart thing to do..
Very few people have the testicles needed to post their failures once they find out themselves.
They just buy a new engine and keep quiet about it

I believe that the gov gear blows up when it's bypassed because the weights are allowed to rest against the sides of the gear deforming it at high rpm. I do not at all want to say that bypassing it is OK, but I fully believe that as long as it's allowed to work as designed that it'll be fine even at high rpm.

I must be doing something wrong with my tach. I did the same thing as the guy in the video did, and still get like 2600-2800 max rpm. I need to redo my tach settings I guess.

I'm not saying anyone's right or wrong, but I enjoy pulling the governor and low oil switch as soon as I acquire an engine. I like checking everything out and the increased oil capacity. Makes an engine feel like it's mine. Plus I am a fan of keeping things as simple as possible, parts I am not using should be gone to avoid useless failures. The engine on the mini bike of my youth ran all my life with the governor left in and bypassed, so I know even total neglect can work for a long time.

At risk of sounding like a jackass, what exactly is the harm in this video? The governor still works and engages. Just at a higher RPM right? Pulling the governor effectively means your only limited is the valves? And that's better than this video?

Are you really risking injury? Or just a $100 motor? These motors aren't that expensive.
