Those of you following my Go-Kart Alley thread know I'm getting close to filming. Getting the set ready now, just need more set dressing. I wanted rusty old small engine signs on the walls (briggs & stratton, techumseh, kohler, Wisconsin, McCulloch etc) but haven't had any luck.

So, I've resorted to printing posters if images of them.

If anyone has or can find any "high resolution," straight on pics of cool looking small engine signs I can blow up, please share:)

Much appreciated!

Dennis

There's a guy that has a store with all kinds of old stuff....I'll try to get by there in the next couple of days and see what he's got on hand.....and of course, I'll keep my eyes open elsewhere.....

Do we have any members in IOWA. I see those guys on American Pickers Frank and Mike, at Antique archaeology, I bet they would help/loan you some real signs. But I know it is down to the wire now. Filming in 12 days! (No pressure) :)

Btw it doesn't have to be "your" sign. I found some great images online but all low resolution. If anyone knows of any good high res images link em here. Thanks!

you got the time (and/or) money?

just trace them / let someone trace them in a vector graphics editor..
(inkscape is free and really good for example.. adobe illustrator would be the benchmark)

not too hard to do, just time consuming and takes a few tries to get it right at first.

after you're done you can blow the image up to whatever size you want

A good set of fonts on your computer will reduce the need for tracing the lettering of course.

I'm sorry, that's not what you wanted to hear..
BUT I guess ten to twenty bucks per pic paid to a student to vector convert images like that should do the trick in most cases.

or try to find svg files on the net (scalable vector graphics)
or "eps" (encapsulated post script) or "ai" (adobe illustrator)

like this:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b2/Harley-Davidson.svg
(you can blow the image up into eternity.. sharp contures all the way ;))
oh look:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/dd/Tecumseh_Products_logo.svg
also: colors can be swapped easily inside an svg ..

http://seeklogo.com/tag.html?q=Stratton
offers some (attached already)

here's an online image to svg converter.. not too bad, but sometimes it fails I'm afraid:
http://image.online-convert.com/convert-to-svg

you need inkscape or the like to view an svg on your computer.
double check, and if the result is not satisfying.. pay a student ;) (well OR DIY :D)

I'm quickly running out of both! Lol!

I took some pics of Briggs and Tecumseh signs at a local mower shop and printed posters at Wal-Mart for $5. I'm pleased with the result. Just need to paste them on boards so I can hang em on a nail and bring em in if it rains:)

Do you want these empty boxes? I have several in different sizes 25 or 30. They are at least 25 years old. You know they are old when the box says made in Milwaukee not China LOL.

I thought so.. that's where the poor students come in :D

well, if the automata inter netista fails that is...
and it fails badly on the wisconsin sign I'm afraid.

Anywhoo...
I'll keep my fingers crossed for you;
I'd even say I'd vectorize one or two,
but I'm afraid I can't make any promises...;
barely enough time to get my own work done ATM :(

[EDIT]
know what.. that's BS..
asking someone else to volunteer and not even try yourself...

Sooo unfortunately I don't have the correct fonts installed ATM
(and can't seem to find them on my harddrives...
maybe because I'm currently migrating to my new computer, and everythings a bit messed up :()

Anywhoo..
outlining and horse done!

If I find my fonts (I'm sure I have at least two of the three I'd need)
I'll complete it.. if not, maybe you can find someone with matching fonts.
(I cannot guarantee I'll be in time)

Oh, yes the dial is ugly.. but it is in the original file already.. so yeah, and yes, the four IS missing ;)
that font is also not a perfect match, but I think it's good enough for now.. feel free to replace it when needed ;)

where I'm at:

PS :censored: zip file is too large to attach...

I knew it :(

Rooooobert?!?! Häääääälp!

PPS whoever want's my .ai to try drop me a line.. I'll email it to you

Can we make up maybe false logos?

I mean, the film industry does things like such anyway.

Good point. Not to really scare our Friendly filmmaker buuut....
I think they use fake logos due to licensing and copyright stuff. Speaking of that Maybe ask the manufacturers to kick down some cash and or signs, it would be free advertisement for them. Like that Richard guy on "fast and loud" ALWAYS has a Miller light. He even swapped Coors for miller in the Bandit car episode!:cheers2:

No luck there....the guy does have a plethora of memorabilia stuff....but no small engine signs.....

Also...."It's a cool place to visit.....but I wouldn't want to live....errr....buy there...."

He had a beat up old 'Bro Man' acoustic guitar....I asked him how much....$250!!!!! Ridiculous!!!!

However, he has lots of old licence plates....and other old stuff....(kinda like American Pickers showroom)...maybe he could be persuaded to rent or loan something for a short time....

Sorry...

Thanks guys, really, for any and all help. Thanks for looking Doug!

And Sid, wow! Thank you! I've been too busy to even check back on my own request. When I saw the "BS asking" I thought you meant me at first then I saw the work. Looking great!

hehe, sorry; no, I meant MYSELF.

and Thank you.
As I said it's not too difficult really,
it just takes a bit of time and a steady hand.
Unfortunately.. no luck with the fonts so far.

But I'm not giving up just yet...

'sid

[EDIT]

Okay, that's it.. I DO GIVE UP..

No chance in detecting the correct fonts ..
I bet I'll find 'em next month or so...

Aaaanywhoo..

in order to finish this at least as good as I can w/o the matching fonts.. I cheated with "close but no cigar" fonts.. even had to draw a character on my own :ack2:

 Nice work sid. As a regular joe I cant tell that is not an original sign.

thank you, yes at first glance it's good,
even at second glance if you do not have the real thing to compare it to. :D

But blown up to 20 x 20 inches, I don't think you can stand in front of it for longer than a full second without noticing the flaws.

But it's not meant to be looked at, is it?
As a Film Set Decoration, I think it's good enough...:stir:

On the same subject...(sort of).... I watch a lot of 60's era shows....and a lot of what they could get by with back then, ...just wouldn't fly today...but they didn't have the technology back then...

Anyway...the worst is the stunt doubles.....

Second is the details....for instance: in 'The Rifleman'....I have seen two episodes where Chuck Connors has a "mystery" square box in his shirt pocket appear ....Both episodes involved a deck of cards at some point.....

Now....either Chuck was supplying them....or...more likely...(based on Johnny Crawford's description of him as a 'big kid'...think he wanted to take the prop home with him...)

:backtotopic: Not yet. I don't recall 60 TV but the 80s were pretty funny, ever notice how on an episode of CHiPs everything blew up in a huge orange fireball. Totally unrealistic, but back then it seemed normal, (probably cause I was like 10 yrs old)
