My first build...

As many of you read in my intro thread I picked up this frame and some extra parts...Goals for the build are something I can ride along in while my youngest learns the ropes..

This project will be very hands on for both of my boys, age 9 and 6...I will do my best to take pictures and update along the way...

Sourced this Honda GX240... Hopefully it is cleaner on the inside than it is on the outside..

HP ratings vary depending on sources... 7.1 or 8 is what I am reading... Need to verify shaft size also...

The shaft on a GX240 is either 1" or tapered; being a water pump, there's a good chance it's tapered

Hmmmmm? Yep, it's 1 inch straight... Just not what I was expecting for threads...

That's actually not that bad, it gives you the opportunity to use double lock nuts on it, which will be stronger than a single bolt with a drop of thread locker on it

Really confused on pictures and videos?.. I posted most of this from my phone last night and it shows up properly on my phone... The youtube video is embedded and the pictures of the carb are different?..

Not sure what I am doing wrong?...

That makes two of us; the numbers are different but the images are the same. Maybe you can try managing the images in the edit/go advanced tab. If the image numbers are the same, remove one & upload the correct one...

You'll need to use the web version to do so, not tapatalk...

Now that you have it running, start it and hold some emory cloth "lightly" on the shaft. It'll clean it up nicely! Are you going to use a clutch or a torque converter.

BTW...love that frame!

Cleaned the shaft up on my lunch hour... Still a little bit of pitting but it doesn't bother me... Now just have to figure out a way to cut a keyway..

Trying to decide if I should do it right or just hillbilly grind it in?

Do it right! It may cost a bit more but, at least you know it's safe...

I joined this sight over others because of the DIY attitude... But I have to ask at what point do you just buy new versus trying to use what you have available... I grew up with a "use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without" family attitude..

I am a true believer in built not bought also, but I just spent 3 hours tearing apart a rear axle that probably is not even going to work.... I know I can use the parts for trading stock or eBay them, BUT!!!!

That answer is easy, and exclusively yours. Do what you can do within your means and abilities.

I've seen Fabroman rag people for farming stuff out; but that's been for simple things that people should want to learn for themselves. Just above your post, he advised you to take your shaft to a machinist to make sure it was done properly with no hance of error.

Noones gonna fault you for not having a welder; but take your engine in to have the oil changed, and all he!! will break loose apon you ll

Oil, these things require OIL?.... Oh no, where do I get that? Is it expensive? What color should I buy?

All kidding aside, I love doing these kind of things... I just wonder if it is worth the TIME it takes to try and make something work vs just buying new... Not talking a whole kart, just simple stuff like spindles and rear axle...

Honestly, right now I have nothing but time in this build... I have not spent a single dollar on anything other than garage supplies and gas to run back and forth.. That is my biggest problem, being frugal... It is hard sometimes to talk myself into spending a dollar..

Suggestions for torque convertor set up? The Honda has a 1" output shaft so that means? Going to start out with a live axle and 22x11-8 rears.. This cart will mainly be driven by kids, age 6 to 40+.. I am not a small fella standing 6'4" and weighing in at about 220...

I do plan on doing some simple mods to the engine, just not sure what yet... Taking suggestions there also..

It will be driven mostly on a gravel lane and barn yard setting... I have a 60 tooth driven gear off of the axle I tore apart tonight, but not married to it...
