Back burner, for now. I lost my entire summer (every weekend) to renovating my grandmother's house so it could be sold. No sooner did I finish that, I moved- so I'm still surrounded by chaos.

Meanwhile, this is a project I won't rush. I'm trying to figure a few things out, such as carb choices. I'm thinking about a 22mm Mikuni, based in pricing, availability, and adjustability.

Just a quick update. Got the items I'll need to put the mockup mounts together.

Some 1/2" MDF



Cut up a couple of aluminum oxygen tanks to get some material for chain/clutch guards.



Obviously, the larger tank sections won't work. Though maybe a small section of them, like an arc, could work.



However I think these smaller tank sections fit perfect!



Cut them in 3" sections. About 1/2" deeper than the clutch depth.



Hopefully I can get to work on the mounts pretty soon. My buddy who's a prototyper is going to help me out with these. He's the one that's gonna cut up the aluminum plate for the finished mounts, too.

I like the idea of the tank sections being used for a clutch guard. How are you going to fix them to the motor and have the chain run through them onto the clutch?

I'll just be using a "C"-shaped section of each for the guards. They'll be welded to the motor mounts.

Picture this mount assembled. Kinda like that.

Got rollin' on the mounts. Thanks to my boyz Jeff & Keith for the help.

My camera died so here are a coupla phone pics. Should have a better update by the end of the weekend.




Motors settin in the frame. Trying to determine fore/aft placement. That's the money shot right there!



Actually, THIS is the money shot!



This'll give you a better idea on mount design.

I cant tell for for sure, but it kinda looks like your clutches are designed to be installed with they're drive gears facing inboard or outboard. Have you already considered installing them inboard?

Yup, they can be mounted either way. I chose to mount 'em outboard strictly because of looks. The backside of the clutch is nothing exciting to look at.

Yeah- some backsides are great to look at, others not so much...

Fast Eddie- How thick is the aluminum plate you're making the mounts from?

Got an issue. I don't think the throttle linkage I was planning to use will work. Here's what I was going with (with the cable elbow pointing straight down)



But I think that little plate will interfere with the motor mount. I think that will also put the cable elbow dangerously close to the chain.

I believe I can clock the throttle shaft somehow...maybe a kit? Then I could run a cable bracket/air filter mount combo off the back of the carb...kinda like this...



If anyone is familiar with this mod, let me know.

Or my other option is to integrate a little tang off the side of the vertical motor mount plate to hold the cable end.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Got the mount design finalized. Check it out! Sorry, my garage camera is completely toast. Had to amend my Christmas list to include a new one. So in the meantime, crappy phone pics are my only option.









Also made some headway on the exhaust. I took a motor with a spare Rupp frame identical to mine to EMC, our local motorcycle/snowmobile junkyard here in SE Michigan. Spent a couple of hours looking through two barns of expansion pipes. After mocking up probably a hundred different pipes, I think I found two that'll work.



They are a couple of pipes of Kawi KX60's. Of course they'll be heavily modified, but their chamber shape and size will fit in the small space I have. Plus, they had silencers too! He had a dozen of em, so I picked up the two nicest ones.

Now before everyone starts posting with the science of expansion chamber design and how these pipes are too small for these motors, let me explain my reasoning. It's simple...it's the lesser of two evils. I don't want to run straight pipes or can mufflers on these motors. And I'm sure these little chambers will provide at least a little performance increase over straight pipes. And any pipes over 100cc were waaay too big for this kart.

Plus, they'll look sweet!!

Remember, it's an experiment. I can always chuck 'em and start over.

Next up-time to get the permanent mounts whittled up!

So this project is so boring that I get 1500 views and only a half a dozen people comment? I do this to get feedback and suggestions. If I wanted to compile a bunch of pictures, I can do that myself.

I'll post a final update when I get it up and running. To those who've helped, I appreciate it.

I notice the forum is a litle slow right now friend. Wish I can help but never worked on a project like yours. I love the pics though.

Anyway keep posting pics. Years from now it's nice to go back and look at your build step by step and the problems you went thru. Also your work is sure to be read for a long time to come.
