looks pretty bent but id bet you can straighten it with a hammer without too much drama. I always pick up mowers with bent cranks and bash the crap out of them with a bfh to straighten them and it usually works. and they have a bigger shaft too. Or you can do it the pus way and get a good used one on ebay for probrobly 15-20$

I've just got to ask, how the hell did they bend the crank??

good question. i cant see how a sudden stop or anything using all that engines power could do it.

defect?

i assume it was originally bent a little, and over time got really bad. this is what i think will go wrong with bending it back. it wont ever be perfect, and over time from spinning it will bend again.

Could be something like the drive jammed, so the motor was trying to turn something solid, and the crank bent.

It takes a lot of force to bend a crank. As porsche930dude mentioned, mowers can frequently be found with bent cranks, usually from hitting rocks or large tree roots. A mower blade spinning @ 3000+ rpm has a lot of inertia, which is all transferred back to the crank when the blade hits a rock and comes to a sudden stop. You will need to exert just as much force (if not more) to bend the crank back. Keep in mind that cold working/forming steel hardens it.

the engine was on a log splitter. he told me that they fed it too much and it started to jam up and some of the internal components started getting loose bashing around causing the motor to jam up and thats how it got bent.

i tried straightening it out with a hammer. I was there for a good 5 minutes and nothing changed.

im not too good with ebay either.

just because it was running a couple days ago doesnt mean it cant lose spark or compression.

what happened the last time you shut it off?

does it pop and fire or nothing at all?

take the spark plug out, wear a glove so you dont get shocked, and hold the spark plug against the engine head with the boot on it, see if it sparks.

also make sure spark gap is .030 about the thickness of a credit card.

It's possible that it has no gas in the tank, it constantly amazes me how often people (myself included!) forget to check something easy & simple like fuel level when troubleshooting problems.

As for the oil, the presence of smoke indicates the presence of oil. Check the oil level & oil color with the dipstick, if you don't have one just use your finger. If the oil is disgustingly black and feels gritty or watery, or worse yet is so low you can't get any on the dipstick, you may have damaged the cylinder when you were running it.

Once you know where you're at with the oil, check compression. If you don't have a gauge, you can simply remove the spark plug and put your thumb over the plug hole. It should forcefully blow your thumb off the hole when cranked over. If not, your compression is low and you'll need to tear it down to find the cause.

I suggest you obtain some books on basic internal combustion engine theory & troubleshooting. There are probably a thousand books at your local library on the subject. Find one geared towards small engines, even if it was written in 1940 the same general principles still apply today. Good luck!

today i took it out to start it up and i was amazed at how hard it was. at first the pto woouldnt trun at all and the pullstart didnt move, then i grapped vise grip pliers and i secured them to the crank and spun it a little and then i was able to pull it. it was really hard to pull it tho and i didnt get to start it up in the end. what could be my problem?? is it because i left it outside??

How long was it outside? Do you mean it was unprotected from the elements?
Why would you buy it then treat it so badly?
But then again...any engine with a bent PTO should have been free to begin with.

If its not turning over, dont force it.

Take the head off and look at the cylinder. If they are deeply gouged it may notbe saveable. If they are mild enough (not over .030 max if it hasnt been honed before) then you can hone it.

Most likely you will need new rings and piston if this is the case because when you hone you need to get bigger rings and piston.

Could also be the connecting rod bearings badly scraped up. This can make it not want to turn over. Caused by over heating and/or nasty oil or low oil.

Honing is NOT used to get to the next bore size.
Boring is used to get to the next bore size.
Honing is for restoring the original surface for oil control.

Where do yo guys get this stuff?
