Default Briggs 5 Hp Funpower Problem

I have a 136212 Briggs & Stratton Fun Power 5 hp motor on my go kart that i am having problems with. It idles fine and will run fine on jack stands where i have the back raised of the ground and engine is tilted, but if i put it on the ground and push the gas down it almost instantly dies. Just had carb cleaned at a local shop and new spark plug, mixture is rich right now since the plug turned black pretty fast but i have tried almost every position of that screw and so far no luck. i am wondering if i am losing vacuum somewhere since when the engine is tilted to where the gas would flow towards the intake and then when its on flat ground it will die when accelerated. maybe the shop did a bad job of cleaning it? bad compression? anyone know the right compression it is supposed to have?

check out the pickup tubes on the carb, they go into the tank, could be cracked/broke/clogged. You will have to remove the carb to check them.

Sounds like you are still running rich, or have a bad intake or tank gasket. Turn the screw all the way in and back it off 1 turn. Start the kart on the ground and slowly push on the gas and see if the kart moves. Turn the screw 1/8 turn at a time until it moves, if no help their, check the gaskets and good compression on these engines is anything over 70PSI

Apply the throttle slowly, these engines lack accelerator pumps.

even when i do the throttle slowly it just bogs way down and stops. also should i use gasket sealer on the gaskets? and could a head gasket cause this problem?

The head gasket is probably fine, you don't need to use any gasket sealer. How do the gaskets look? Did you try adjusting it like i said? BTW what gear ratio and tire size are you using

The gasket between the carburetor and gas tank has a small rip in it from when i was putting it back together awhile ago and i spilled some gas on it. im hoping thats the problem, at the time i didn't think it was a big deal but maybe im losing to much vacuum under load for it to work.

yes, that is a very important gasket, I would replace the gaskets between your tank and between your motor. Together they should cost about $3

would a bent frame matter much?, not severely bent but i noticed it once when i was pushing it into my shed

bent frame? on the engine? no such thing, and if its the kart that is bent, no it wouldn't affect it. If you have not replaced the gaskets you will get no where.

i plan on taking a picture of the gasket that i am talking about and also of my clutch and posting them sometime soon, not sure if its bad and just wondering what model it is if anyone knows. haven't changed gasket yet cause starting of spring here and its all muddy outside so im waiting and just trying to find the problem in the meantime.

Do you have plenty of gas in the tank? I'm with Kap'n on this one. You must make sure that those pickup lines are open. Also with the pickup line that reaches down into the tank, bend it slightly forward. This will help the flow of gasoline.

Inspect those lines closely, With all the gas going forward it could "fill in" the crack in the deep pickup tube.

The carb to tank gasket has no relation to this problem. Get it replaced, as gas can leak out around the carb and tank joint.

That gasket can have EVERY relation to this problem. Just replace them for a few dollars anyway.

the gaskets on these 5hp engines are critical, if he replaces the gaskets and it doesn't work then feel free to flame

When you place the kart on the ground do you happen to hear a whirring sound and then the kart shuts off? About 70% of the time people have this problem where the engine can run just fine on a jack stand but cant on the ground its due to a burnt out clutch or clogged torque converter, have you been oiling the clutch every 2 hours of use?

i think my dad oiled the clutch a few times but i don't think every 2 hours of use so that is my next guess as being the problem, i planned on taking a picture of it and posting it on here probably tomorrow to see what you guys think. how do you tell if its bad? i dont remember hearing the whirring sound but then again i wasn't listening for it.

The clutch will engage on its own given that you've burnt up the spring. If you ride the kart too slow with the clutch half engaged or if you tend to ride the gas and the brake at the same time you can hurt the clutch severely. Also if your gear ratio is poor it can harm the clutch.

Basically when the clutch is on the stand, hold down your brakes and see how it sounds. If it kills the engine thats a bad sign, heh.

Didn't even think about the clucth. try removing it and see if you can free rev the engine

Yea this hapened to my engine and it was the clutch. as soon as it was on the ground the whole engine would shake because of the locked-up cluch and die.
