Default The Search function doesn't seem to work?

Hi,
I've tried it various ways but it just gives me a list of the most current general postings....nothing to do with the search topic.
Help?

we can't not unless you tell us what you were searching for I'm afraid.

the search is rather basic and unfortunately does not allow boolean search either
it's still rather effective in most cases.

but keep in mind that common words do not lead to precise results.
"wheels, gear, ratio, size, predator" etc.. are mentioned in likely every thread (incl this one now )
and so a search for that will... well won't.. work very well

more common words ard short terms are automatically left out (four letters or more per word)
this then that will be deleted and most verbs will as well.

quotation marks help to narrow down the search results
"search function" (in quotes) for example leads to this thread rather quickly [first hit]

open http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/search.php
to search for titles only or narrow down the search for a post of a specific user and basically play around with it's options to find better results (like date and such)

if all else fails,
use the mighty powers of google.

enter your search term in google (as one normally does)
and add
"site: diygokarts.com"
(all w/o the quotes that is)

and then all results are shown from DIYGK only and you basically can find every single word that's ever posted as precisely matching your search topic as possible

Google does an alright job at pointing us in the direction we need to go.
I always assume that is how people find this place.

That is how I found DIYGK. Ask google enough questions about karts and Google keeps pointing to relevant threads on this site. I often use the advanced search on here (I only use the advanced search) to look up something very specific. Like didn't that one person say that thing about the thing. How's that for being Ambiguously Specific? LOL It works fine when I remember some specific verbage from a post and who said it.

I only use advanced as well. Eliminates 30,000 responses.

It seemed to not work whatsoever.
Its frustrating when you're new and everyone says USE THE SEARCH..ITS BEEN DISCUSSED MANY TIMES.

I searched Shifter Kart Engines and i got the same results as just going to the forum and opening it...all if todays posts...all of yesterday's posts, etc.
Thanks

as I said this is non boolean search
you unlikely used embracing quotes, did you?

So what you searched for was:

find every thread that contains the word
shifter or the word kart or the word engines and show me all of them.

you see why you got basically all the forum content, right?

if you'd used quotes you would have gotten

find me all threads that contain the term
"shifter kart engines" and show me all of them

ommit the word kart and engines and you find more..

BUT ... and this is really getting me ...

everyone says "Use the search it's been discussed many times" ???
YOU NEVER HEARD THAT!!
NOT EVER..
what you heard INSTEAD was

So allow me to say:
it's frustrating when a Newbie comes along and complains about being constantly ordered to use the search function when in fact
he only ever have been once told, that there are threads worth searching for and that he'd get help with it in case he's having trouble with the search.

So I'm afraid, that's an attitude that makes me NOT want to be the one looking up the threads you need. and hence there is no example.

I told you how our search works and where it's flaws are..
and even how to use the powers of google with exclusive results on diygokarts.
You should be able to find the threads on your own now.

I just searched for "shifter kart engine" in quotes.
Here are the results...
http://www.diygokarts.com/vb/search....archid=3506820

And then I asked google "diygokarts shifter kart engine"

I have noticed that sometimes a mystery page appears in a thread.
It will show me that there is another page, then I try to click to go to that page and it brings me back to the page I was just on.

What is hidden on the mystery pages? Deleted Posts?
I want access to the secret scrolls.

Huh. I don't know. Give me an example and I'll let you know! (Probably deleted stuff if I had to guess, though)

What i do in the advanced search is use the option to only search thread titles. So if i search for "shifter karts" only in thread titles, you are pretty sure to narrow down actual build logs about shifters

The pic below is an example of what i mean
