I have been lurking talking trash and having fun here. You accepted me (if not.....be nice....and be quiet) :p

1st off, I write like the great icon spoke "Capt. KIRK"

Enjoy this tale that may take a couple years

I asked earlier "What is a go-kart?" Noone knew how to answer, that odd question.

I am going to build a CycleKart...a miniature car inspired from a car from the past, generally teens to pre WWII.

My car will be based on the Vale Special, basically a race car built between 1933 and 1936, based off the Triumps of the time, the Gloria Southern Cross....

The black and white picture is where I started to scale it.

Curious?

The name?.....

Curious, hugh?

Thanks to itSid...
:cheers2:
It basically means "The goat shed motor works"

Link to why the name....

Lets catch up, mostly been prepping for this, by buying parts and some tools.
Power is by predator 212, transmission of power is generic tav30, 1 inch axle, brakes, pedals and sprockets are all typical gokart stuff.

The wheels are 17 inch Honda motorcycle.

The hubs are from VKC, installed by drilling out holes in the rear wheels.

Front use typical bearings and I made spacers to keep from crushing the wheel when axle nut is tightened. 3/4 inch spindle, may swap out to 5/8 to get a slightly bigger bearing, we'll see.

Also attached a picture of the frame rails, they are 1.00 x 3.00 x .120 wall ERW steel. They are 98 inches long2020-04-17 12.22.25.jpg2020-04-20 20.48.35.jpg2020-04-22 18.36.21.jpg212.jpgrails.jpg

These typically use Amish type buggy seat springs, you buy 2 sets so you have a matching pair, which of course means you have an extra set for the 2nd kart

Springs are 24 inches long and have about 4-1/2 inches of height In the arc.

I cut the nuts off to separate them.

Took the spring packs apart; always use a c-clamp to control pressure even on these small springs.

They had very bad burrs on 4 ends from stamping and powder coat was rough and lumpy.

So I hit ends quick with a 4-1/2 inch 80 grit sand disk, followed by orbital sander and 120 grit to smooth out the entire spring surfaces that rub together, next a light coat of grease was rubbed in and excess wiped off.

Notice I used SHCS (Socket Head Cap Screws) to reassemble the springs, this gives me a locator pin for the axle perches.

Was this necessary? Probably not BUT, that is why you build something like this so you can "tinker and tune"20200430_184822.jpgSprings 2.jpgSpring 4.jpgSpring 5.jpgSpring 6.jpg20200501_135834.jpg20200502_185549.jpg

Looking good so far!! Just something to keep in mind, which i am sure you know, is that motorbike wheels do not take side loads very well and can buckle under pressure. In usual operation on a bike they pretty much never have side loads. On a kart though, they will. I am sure you know this, but just keep it in mind

Looks like a cool build! Cyclekarts are cool, I want to build one someday.

Honestly a little Honda four-banger would be really cool to put in there!

Yup, going to use it to build my kart, and art work, bumpers etc...hope to have up and cutting next weekend...too much work...at work.
Really want to try and step up my fab skills, I have the honey combed frame rails drawn up...so frame should end up 1/3 of normal wt and just as strong....at least that is what I can tell Blue Cross/Blue Shield at the ER as I pay my deductible

well 4 months later and no progress on kart yet. Between work, travel (by ourselves, we hate people/crowds) :innocent:

Have been cutting and learning plasma table, designing new house, fixing current house
..yada,yada....new forum format took awhile to get back on, just been reading....
