Hi, I'm currently working on a go-kart project. I'm pretty new to this, I know generally how an engine works and approximately what I need to do to assemble a functional go-kart. I've dismantled an old snowblower, and have the engine. It's an 8hp engine and I know I need to buy a clutch for it, however the shaft diameter on the engine is 7/8 in, and all I can find online are 3/4 and 1 inch id clutches. Am I missing something, or is this uncommon? Also would buying a 7/8 to 1in bushing in combination with a 1 in clutch work if this is just an odd engine?

Thanks a ton for the time
Santino

5/8", 3/4", and 1" are the standard diameters for clutches. 7/8" is one of the "odd" sizes.
If you post up some pics of your particular engine we might be able to help.
Basically, your options are:
1 - Turn down the output shaft on a lathe, then have a new keyway machined into it.
2 - Swap the crankshaft for a 1" output one.
3 - Get a custom clutch made for it.

But yeah, pics would help.

That's a Tecumseh flathead.
That adapter looks like it would work just fine, go for it!:cheers2:

First.. check to see if that is an adapter for 7/8".. it might be a 3/4" shaft underneath..
I say this as the look of the shaft isnt right.. it looks like its way bigger than it should be... So concluding it might be an adapter... also there isn much shaft to mount a clutch aswell as it will be sticking out quite a bit on the end of it... you might need to run a support bearing.

If it is a tru stepped down shaft to 7/8".. then still a 1" bore clutch is pretty expensive... It might be cheaper to get a new shaft the right size, and swap it out...

That or just sell that engine off and keep looking for a better one.

Kind of looks like the engine may already have a 3/4 to 7/8 adapter on it. doesn't look like that shaft coming out is one piece. I could be wrong as i normally am when it comes to this stuff. Just saying :) Cant really tell by the picture.
