I'm thinking about pulling off the governor off my HF clone. How are you guys hooking up your throttle back to the carb?
Any pics would be awesom-o.

i had such a hard time getting it to sit in the right spot, i took the whole carb and linkage off and put a simple 14/12 dellorto carb... way easier.... for me any way, as i build mopeds, and that was a carb from a moped... yes its a 2 stoke, and no it dosnt matter, it is jetted properly, nice brown plugs, and great idle, and throttle response ...

with the governor off i have it at about 2800 rpms so far... its pretty fast... ohh and i mite also would suggest you get one of these http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_524744_524744 a 40 dollar tach, very good investment, too keep it under the 3500 it says is the max rpm...

well if your intentionally keeping your engine under governed rpms, why even bother taking the gov. off? Get some new parts(con. rod, valve springs, etc...) and gain some rpms. Even if you dont upgrade internals, you should be able to go a good bit over max rpm(3600) safely.

1700-2000? The gov should allow the engine to get up to around 3600rpm. fishblock, if you dont already have one, i would strongly suggest getting a torque wrench. I have an in.lb. wrench from harbor freight that works fine. Over torquing a side cover can ruin a side cover as i found out.

EDIT: Ill post some pics of how i set up my throttle on my clone tomorrow.

Actually, i do have a pic

I used part of the gov. arm to make a new throttle lever. Drilled a hole in the flywheel cover, and put a 1/4-20 bolt through with a nut on the other side(put some locktite on the bolt to keep it tight). Then i used a piece of welding rod(you can use a coat hanger) to connect the new lever to the butterfly on the carb. The cable will hook up to the side of the lever closest to the camera.

and also the governor only lets you get up to about 1700-2000 rpms and then closes the intake off internally...

What?
Every other industrial engine on the planet is governed to 3600, and the internally driven governer acts externaly on the carb. Got pics? And.. 1700-2000 rpm max? Whatinhe//'s your idle speed???
Some clutches don't even engage that slowly!

alright guys, dont bash the me too hard , i'm just going off what my tach is telling me.... before i had taken the internal governor gear out of the gear box, when in full throttle at about 2000 rpms it would engage and slow the motor... so i took it out and now its gotten up to about 3000, as i dont have long enough roads or good enough brakes... i will get some pics of the tach readings later on as i am off to work right now.... i'm also not using the stock carb that came with the motor.... as posted in my post and pic above...

Sounds like your just geared too high. These engines will hit over 5 grand without governor, stock. governer keeps rpm at 3600. idle is around 1500-1700 for engines with automatic compression release, lower for engines without.

it depends. If you replace the proper parts and properly maintain it, then there wont be much of a change. Now, if you leave everything else the same and over rev the engine and float the valves, then sure, the life will be shortened.
