Railroads consider public safety to be the flip side of their operational safety and security, if for no other reason than the fact that no matter what the circumstances, if a civilian gets injured or killed on their property, they know that they are going to get sued.

Amtrak has massive crossing gates on the highest speed part's of their corridor between Chicago and Detroit, complete with camera's. For the record, over most of North America, the train tracks preceded the local road's, which means that the trains automatically have the legal precedent for rules of right of way. Rail right of ways are also private property.

Despite all the legal precedent, Amtrak has been sued by many people who violated traffic law's when they tangled with traffic crossing gate's or a train. The class 1's have it even worse. And that's not going to change anytime soon.

The easiest way to deal with it? Stay off the track's.

But....here's the other side of the coin.....I can walk to tracks that haven't seen a train in over 20 years...and outside of WW3....never will....

One thing to understand is....Ft. Worth is the original gateway to the west.....and it wasn't just the stockyards....but the railroad....and packing houses....that. made Ft. Worth what it is.....

Also....Ft. Worth....was a MAJOR contributor to the war effort in WWII...as Convair Oaks.....aka.....General Dynamics....now known as Lockheed....built bombers and had railroad tracks straight into the plant......

They now build fighter jets...and get materials via 18 wheelers....and the line coming in is missing a bridge 5 miles away.....so I'll bet $1,000,000....that no train is.coming down those tracks anytime soon.......and there are other dead spurs around.......

anywhere that has hard big industry fail or shut down will have unused tracks

the kalgoolie gold rush of 1893 led to loads of towns springing all over the place
some had rail roads
but once the gold ran out everyone walked out

my granddad said they used to drive up there in the 40s and u could just walk into these places and it was like everyone just stood up and said thats it lets go
fully stocked houses
a few old cars/trucks that still ran many that didnt

now with new tech the boom is back on

but with the ground water being 30 times saltier than the sea there's not much left
and if u did find a rail road then its just ded straight for 100s of kms though dessert

its odd to think that old steam engines used to travel down the train lines bringing in loads of hopeful people
then dragged out those same broken people
now after just laying down new track in the same spots theres huge deisel elcetric locos pulling upto 7 kms of train filled with all kinds of stuff

i love going to old abandoned industrial areas

out of intrest some of the big industrial areas that collapsed like detriot
there would be loads of rail layed by companys that have been broke for a very long time

who owns those tracks now?

the tracks a few km from by place service a few of the cbh grain depos
these thing are seen cruising the lines in the off season
doing track maintenence and what not
