so "is it finally happening?" yeah, heII yeah it happened, with the old house under contract and most of our boxes unpacked in New River it's time for a dedicated thread about life on acreage in the Arizona desert

life has kind of calmed down since the move and I've been able to work on the new house here and there trying to focus on essentials but for sure some squirrel moment projects have popped up

so for essentials number one, the first week we had an amazing rain storm and amazing water coming in the office , I had to relieve a pocket of water behind paint on the drywall and I was not very pleased with that, found out we were missing several shingles on the roof and had a couple patches of exposed felt paper, a $35 trip to Home Depot between shingles and a tube of patching tar and the roof is water tight again

I built a dog house thing, the kind that if we see it on a nabe's property we instantly call it a rape shack, it's made from the old floating kicker/barge we made for wakeboard comps, it keeps the wind off the dog and everybody happy happy happy

we have several leaky hose bibs, one that just leaks, the others leak when open and I bought a new one to replace the active leaker- what a discovery, there is a shut off valve between the well pump and the pressure tank, but no valve between the tank and the house, so tomorrow I will fill our 55 gallon drums (for future rain collection) with the pressurized water so I can install a secondary water shut off at the house, I connected the short length of hose to see exactly how much it was leaking into the hole the pipe emerges from

I plan to install gutters to catch rain water just as much keep runoff from dumping on our patios and we'll fill our barrels to water plants, I also want to replace the gate valve at the well with a ball valve

so much to do, so little time, I'll try to keep this thread up to date but no promises

bout got my tail whipped installing this valve all because I didn't heat the bottom sweat thouroughly before adding solder, for me plumbing is love/HATE but I got it done, I also replaced the always leaky hose bib and adjusted the garage door tension spring- only to find out I need to order new springs like right away

i can only guess the previous residents (who were renters) or the owner recently replaced broken spring(s) with a single spring so all seems fine for now except the door was exceptionally heavy to lift manually, the home inspector pointed that out to me as well, so I adjusted it to where it's balanced but "hot" and we weighed it- 200lbs so new springs are order to replace the single spring that is surely to break soon

it was also SUPER chilly this morning, probably the coldest of the season and certainly the coldest in our new house, here's the dog water setup to give you an idea and dont forget, this is in the DESERT

oh yeah, i built our first rain barrel but it will probably be good time between now and when i install gutters to channel water in to it

here's some pics, my boat and Avalanche under the carport, the first rain barrel I made using a bulkhead fitting, 2" pipe nipple, 3/4" ball valve, and pipe to hose adapter

I don't know if this is the best thread for this post but it's pretty good. Take a read down memory lane and you'll see what lead up to my new house.

2012

2015

2016

Yesterday I had another day in court for the tarp that was covering my RV pad. I beat the city of phoenix at their own game, the judge asked what evidence I had to present at the hearing and I replied the city inspector has all my evidence, I won because I was able to prove the tarp is not a structure and is exempt from their dumb rules

it's bittersweet since its a moot point now and I kind of wish I let it escalate like this earlier, but this was from a complaint in December (from who I wonder....)

I am so elated to have beaten them, "flew" my "illegal" tarp for 5 years, received 2 citations, and beat them both in court, and now I am beyond their jurisdiction and on track to build a legitimate workshop which I couldn't have done if I didn't keep working under that tarp in phoenix

some times you have to break the rules and stick to your guns to achieve your goals

Looks like we’re adopting a couple of rescues, getting the pen ready for them!

Wow... Slow down there.... That might be the startings of a tarped lean-to.... Getting kinda crazy there.... ;)

Nice setup... The pigs I'm sure they'll be happy together...
Any chickens, or a bit too hot for raising them there??? (I ask as I'm really not sure of how the climate is in AZ...)

ha ha, we are going to get chickens soon, probably after we build the shop though so we don't have to relocate a coop, I'm excited for the chicks and the fresh eggs!

woot woot! having some beers with my old man Sunday, he says to me, "I'm gettin a new a/c unit, mine is older and I just want to replace it before I have problems." I said give it to me and he did! It's not pretty but it should work for awhile in the new shop. The old house closed yesterday!!! I'm still waiting for funds to hit the bank account but I can not wait to order a structure!

I plan to install the HVAC myself to a point, I'm not going to pretend like I have the training but I'm comfortable running lines for refrigerant, electrical, and making brackets/stands to support the fan and handler, what I can do by myself I will to save money, I'll def have to hire someone to flush and charge the refrigerant lines

and finally made a wood splitting accessory, what a PITA!

(3) 1/2" bolts secure the 2 tires together, there are several holes in all sidewalls so rain water will not collect, this will keep the wood upright as it is split so I dont have to continually pick it back up
