I have a question, please reply. Im 13 and live in kansas, well my dad got me a custom built trike and i need a kind of outline on what needs to be done so i can ride it legally, and, can i at 13? i can post a picture if you would like.
Pics are ALWAYS welcome! But, yeah, like Kenny said, you'd have to go to your DMV to see what's required in your state.

I'm thinking about doing this too! Reverse trike. 2 front, 1 rear wheel. I might end up going 4 wheels though. I'll probably go with an electric motor to avoid the whole smog check thing. Still considering details.
For those considering registering a non-electric DIY 4 wheeler in CA, look into Senate Bill 100 and SPCNS Certificate of Sequence. Provides special smog procedures for specially constructed vehicles. Only 500 per year, and they're gone by around noon the first day! For other requirements (lights, fenders, etc), check the California Vehicle Code.
I assume you mean "ride it legally" on the street. I don't know about KS regulations, but you'll probably need some kind of driver's license or motorcycle license. As far as equipment on the trike to make it street legal, check your local vehicle code. I agree with others that you should talk to your local DMV but don't be surprised if it takes a while to find someone that knows much about legalizing a custom built trike. the SCV smog thing is very very tricky and if you dont have a full blown car you may not even get a chance, if theres any holdups in the procedure you may be too late and have nothing till next year. HUGE hassle, possible but very very tricky.
remember that your competition there is every kit car, sand rail, and custom car waiting in line as the exempt status greatly increases resale value. if the DMV person is looking at a homemade go kart that barely looks legal and a shiny painted cobra replica or lamborghini replica, you probably won't stand a chance.
i follow kit cars quite actively and know the strategies with this loophole/temporary fix in smog exemption and people plan this stuff months and months in advance.
as a side note, the confusing CA definition of a motorcycle is 2 wheels with at least one driven by a motor, and a motorcycle with sidecar is 3 or 4 (!!) with one or 2 wheels driven by a motor. it's open for interpretation but it suggests you may be able to make a 4 wheeled 'motorcycle' using motorcycle parts. i'd look into this though. i know the reverse trike is a well proven way to go.
