Hey, I just picked up this older Sprint chassis last month. Thing is, I cant figure out what brand it is. I was told it was a mid-90's Margay, but it does not have any numbers stamped in the frame (near the spindles) like Margay's are supposed to.

It does have some digits stamped into the frames R/R axle bearing mount that read: CIK 004 n.10 82.
I googled "CIK" and it seems to be a European go kart racing association and not a specific kart brand...
This kart has lots of metric hardware and my local sprint kart shop guy thinks its an older Biesse (Italian made) chassis.

Any of you guys have any idea what brand/model/year this thing might be?`

I've had this older (1977) 406cc. 10-h/p flathead Honda (model G-400) sitting around the shop here for years just waiting for a kart:

So... I bought some very strong 1/2" aluminum plate from a metal-scrap yard ($10) and cut out a motor-mount adaptor to bolt this beast of an engine directly to the much smaller bolt-pattern of the 5hp Briggs motor mount that came on my kart.

After doing a LOT of research on the net, I decided to buy and use this Noram Star #35 / 1" bore centrifugal clutch model: http://www.out2win.com/catalog/noram.html#star

(I selected my clutch with the 18 tooth driver option, and used the same 65 tooth rear sprocket that came with my kart. I bought a new #35, RLV brand 'Gold on Gold" model chain)

I drilled a hole in my carbs factory plastic, heat-insulator, and installed a 1/4' barbed-fitting, to slide a hose on, that supply the pulse-signal, that is used to drive/operate the large-round Mikuni pulse-fuel pump you can see mounted on the frame in the second pic below:

So far, my engine mods have only been to disconnect the governor and build a home made straight pipe. I'm planning on slowly enlarging the original carbs main-jet until the spark plugs insulator/electrode is reading a perfect tan color.

I just got it running and took it out to a large parking lot for its first serious ride... I figured this old motor wasn't going to turn much over 5000 rpm but its definitely a torque monster. Its got a strong launch and I'm guessing its topping out around 50mph or so.

I've been checking around and haven't found any "off the shelf" speed parts made for this model. I'm looking to build a better pipe soon and wanna locate (or build) a nice intake manifold to install a 28 or 30mm Mikuni carb/air cleaner. I was thinking about checking out a local motorcycle junk yard for likely donors.

I've got a couple buddies finishing up their older sprint kart projects right now and we'll probably be doing some parking lot racing soon.

My town has this 1/5 mile dirt oval kart race track: http://www.azkarting.com/default.htm and I've been thinking about bringing it out to a few practice sessions to start, these guys are pretty fast and I figure I've got a lot to learn before racing there. We've also got a couple sprintkart tracks here but they dont seem to have any classes that allow 4-stroke engines.

I'd appreciate any info, advice or comments you guys might have on my project here.

Thanks.

(Edit:
I ended up having major problems with my carb flooding simply because the extra-large sized fuel pump I'd used developed way too much fuel pressure/volume, and this overwhelmed the little needle and seat valve in my stock Honda carb causing flooding problems.

My original fuel pump hookup worked just fine at first, my carb only developed these flooding issues after I'd started seriously racing my kart at a race track.

So... I ended up totally modding my fuel system to have a "return line" with an adjustable fuel valve installed. This lowered the fuel pressure/volume reaching the carb and I never had another flooding problem after that.

At the same time, I'd also installed a marine-type, fuel primer-bulb, in-line with my fuel supply input line to the pump, simply so I could always prime my carb for easier starting.

Here's some pics of how my fuel system is plumed and all set up on this same kart nowadays:

That small secondary plastic tank you see (mounted over the top of my regular fuel tank) is simply hooked up to the breather hose in my gas cap. The purpose of this "fuel tank breather catch-can" is simply to catch/hold any fuel that would spill and might leak all over me in case I ever flipped my kart and was pinned underneath and unable to get out... just for added safety.

You can also see the 3-stage race header (W/aluminum support bracket) I built, along with an RLV-racing muffler, and my race-type air cleaner with a crankcase-breather filter all installed in these pics below:

Hey thanks Raywelder,

The dude I got it from had just had the frame powder coated and bought a bunch of new parts before he ran low on funds and decided to sell it to me. He said he'd origanaly planned on buying a Tecumseh Star motor and racing at our dirt oval track here.

Nice kart! I can identify it for you... It's a "KibbleKart"!!!
I live in Apache Junction- so imagine my surprise when I saw that they have kart tracks here! These aren't open to any karts, though, are they?.... (Just the KibbleKarts?)

I wonder what can actually be allowed on that track, kart wise? The closest thing I have is the TreeFrog kart....?

Also, have you ever seen that motocross track on Ironwood, South of the Superstition Freeway? Always wondered about that....

Regarding your kart... if you plan on "flat-tracking" it with that motor, I'd try for a 53T in back, and GPS it down a stretch of road. You should nail 60mph at around 5000 rpm, (I guesstimated your tire diameter at 11").

"KibbleKart"... ;) I love it !

Hey Jerry, have you found any cool places to ride/race karts out there in AJ?
I've been trying to hook up with other local karters interested on racing parking lots or whatever.
I posted this ad: http://phoenix.craigslist.org/nph/rvs/1152278308.html
I've got a few responses and I'm trying to put something together for this weekend or next if your interested.

Someone sent me a link to these 8 youtube videos from a dirt-oval kart track out in the far west valley.
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=&search_query=rainbow+valley+speedway&aq=f
Looks like a pretty cool little track.

Also, AKA: http://www.azkarting.com/default.htm has a "fun kart" class that most any kart can enter. I heard they used to get a pretty good turn out but havent had enough guys entering this class lately. They said we only need a minimum of 3 karts to start the class up again. I'm kinda interested in giving it a shot...

That'd be cool! I'd love a "Run What Ya Brung" class to mess around in. I couldn't find the "Fun Kart" class rules though....?

If you check in the off-topic section under kart tracks you'll see a picture of where I/We run our karts. It's on Idaho St, just South of the Superstiom Freeway. (NW corner of Baseline/Idaho.) It's state land- so it's kinda iffy on whether you get tossed off or not. Another spot we found is just West of State RT 79 about 3 miles South of Florence Junction.

Right now, the only kart I have running is my Lowrider "Classic".... everything else is either pulled apart or broken.

If I did get to race on a real track, it'd have to be this kart.... I'm going to mount slicks all around on it, and a Blue 6.5hp with Torq-a-verter.

Yeah, its not listed as an official race class. I've only found fun class info posted in AKA's forum (discussion) section.

Fun Class rules:

1) HAVE FUN

2) ALWAYS FOLLOW RULE #1

3) ENTRY FEE $25.00 race 2 heats and a main event.

4) Pill draw at registration will be the main event line up.

5) All 2 cycle and 4 cycle open engines are to be raced by inexperienced/beginner drivers and will tag the heats and mains

6) No weight restrictions in this class.

7) Age, adult class age 16 years and up.

8) If a driver wants to run the main Fun event, their will be a $10.00 fee and they will tag the field. As long as they follow the rules above.

9) Pass pre-tech inspection

Here's A few more fun class threads I found:

Hey guys, I've finally got some new pics and updates to post.

Firstly... I'd got to kinda worrying about my meat grinder of a chain/clutch evilly spinning away just an inch or so away from me:

So I made up a beefy chain guard using some 4" x 1/4" angle-aluminum. Then I used a regular Briggs chain guard, thats kind of reverse-mounted to my aluminum angle. (this helped shield the front and side better):

I decided to go with some aluminum strap to finish off the sprocket end:

(I built a Wolf plate and made up a support bracket for my pipe. / I finally scrounged up a bumper that fits too)

When I got this kart, it came with a plastic overflow bottle made for conecting to the fuel tanks vent tube. I finally made up an aluminum mounting bracket for it and got it all hooked up:

I'd noticed my spark plug and pipe both showed signs that my engine was running extremely lean. So I've drilled my carbs main jet out 2 (number-bit) sizes larger and seem to have it jetted much closer now.

(finally got my seat cover inserts mounted)

My front end has adjustable Caster/Camber and I've been experimenting with diferent settings. My old dry rotted tires are all as hard as rocks, I'm saving up for some new skins next.

Hey JerryAssburger... Did you get that kart going yet?

I finally hooked up with those East-valley parking lot racers Id heard of. They're currently racing on a big industrial lot way out in South Chandler. I went out and raced with them last weekend... I did pretty well but they were all allot quicker and pretty much kicked my butt.
(they all had ultra high $$$ race kart engines... :drool5: I dont think I'm ready to run with those dudes quite yet...

My 2 buddy's still havent got their karts finished up and I'm getting bored riding around by myself.
So get yer kart going and lets go ride/race somewhere dude... :toetap05:

I'm not sure, I imagine theres some tracks that would let you. Many organized kart tracks have a very picky tech inspector that will go over every inch of your kart before your aloud to race. I'd imagine the final decision would be up to him.

I've heard of some tracks not allowing some older race kart chassis (pre-1990 or so, including older frames made of smaller 1" tubing) to compete at all. Many tracks use different rule books that you have to follow.

As far as building your own frame goes, compared to back yard fun type karts, theres a awful lot of thought and engineering that goes into building a competitive race chassis. They're designed to twist and flex a certain amount to both handle well and hold up to some serious abuse.

You might find some kart racing rule books posted for your track in this search link: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...rt+racing+rule+book&btnG=Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi= But many are not posted on the net. (that way they can sell-em to all the racers and make more $$$... ;)

Looks like a way cool track there freakboy. They have some rules posted here: http://www.sspracing.net/
I didnt see any go kart type classes listed but looks like they race 600cc Micro Sprints. If your thinking about getting into this level of racing, I'd seriously recommend you start out buying someones used setup.
