Minibike Advice

Okay, this is what I have been planning to do...

-Put on this motor http://www.pccmotor.com/lifan-125cc-motor-eng.html

-Make a throttle, and shifter linkage

-Make wheelie bar and maybe do a little work on the body
Does this sound correct and/or feasible?

-Also, I know the lifan 125cc will be a little bit more power than I need, but I'd rather have more than I need than less.

-Double Also, Would I need to buy a header and an air filter also?

Edit: Would it be better to find a used minibike?

If you like it, go for it. But for over $700 you have a lot of other interesting choices.

If I'm reading it right, it looks like you do in fact need to buy an air cleaner and exhaust pipe to go with this engine.

That's why I wanted to look into a used frame, which I thought I had found on this forum, but was actually someone asking about whether or not to buy a frame from an ad
The reason I really want the lifan is the 4 speed gearbox. However, if I could find a used complete setup, (air filter, header, gas tank) that would be perfect.

Edit: Oh, Russ I thought it was necessary to set up a linkage yourself.

Keep looking on craigslist until you find somebody selling an old dirt bike with a dead engine. Also, you could build whatever kind of bike you want from metal tubing, and put the Lifan engine on it.

An engine with a gear box is going to be designed for a specific tire size to sprocket size ratio. Generally motorbikes have smaller sprockets and bigger tires. If you put that engine on the Azusa bike in your link, it will go slower because of the bigger sprocket and smaller tire. There's nothing wrong with that, but it will be a peel-out wheelie machine.

My ideal solution would be to go to the scrap yard and look for a thrown-away dirt bike. My local yard will sell this kind of bike for ten bucks usually. I had a nice little bike for a while that was a perfect match for your Lifan engine. All it needed was a fuel tank, throttle linkage, and rear brake linkage, and an engine of course. I ended up selling it on craigslist for $30 because I had too many other projects.

You can get a very similar kit online at $265. Add another $150 for an engine, clutch, etc. and you'd be good to go.
Or for about $450 (depending on where you live, plus tax) you could buy one of those Chinese automatic 110cc dirt bikes.
I've got a 12 year old daughter that I need to start riding on something two wheeled. The above options have been well researched.

buy a beat vintage mini on craigslist and restore it. They are really starting to go up in value. So atleast youll have a chance at getting your money back out of the progect if you ever decide to sell it. Those kit bikes are just a money pit
