lights from coil? with regulator?

so i was wondering if i could use the power from the kill switch wire along with a voltage regulator to power 1 light...? any thoughts, i'm not trying to put a alternator on my engine, if ii have to maybe a small battery ....

i would imagine it would effect timing and hurt power, have you checked voltage with a multi meter? i would use 1 of those mini generator things, i forget what they are called but they generate electricity and are tiny

i figured this was a bike or something because, i know some bikes run headlights off the coil.. What engine are you actually speaking of?

I think he's meaning from the ignition coil on an industrial engine, if so, it will not work. As EagleTalons says, connecting it to the kill switch wire would ground the coil and kill the spark. besides, I doubt it would generate enough electricity to power anything but the ignition system.

Your thinking of CDI ignition, where there is a Stator (coil, normally under flywheel, sometimes outside), which powers the CDI, and ignition coil. The power is always taken from the stator, not the ignition coil.

The stator has separate coils for lights and ignition, the ignition coil is much smaller and finer, so it makes good power at very low RPM(if the coil ran on the main stator you would most likely need a battery). This is not always true however, I have push started a VW powered sandrail with a completely dead battery.

good point, stators are almost always dual coil, or more. My kz400 engine uses the same coil for ignition and power i think, however it has points and a battery.

I had a 66 Yamaha Trail Master 100 that ran lights off the coil or stator. Too bad its at the junkyard =P

VW use generators instead of alternators. So they can use dead batteries and not damage the generator. Unlike using an alternator with a dead battery.

Most VW engines used a Generator. Newer old models started using high output alternators.
