True to "Assburger Engineering Practices and Codes", I never give too much thought to braking, so yes, those poor little brake-pads up front handle the duties. Don't last very long either. Top speeds.... about 35mph with the 3hp, 47mph(GPS) with the 5hp, and 51mph(GPS... but I chickened out!) with the 8hp. It's very stable for cornering, etc, but torque steer is pronounced with the 8hp on it. One of the interesting things about this design is the low- rolling resistance. You can cut the engine and coast like a 10-speed bike. None of my other carts will do this.I'll be going back to a 6.5hp HarborFright engine when I get the time/$$$$.

In my quest for "Cheap, but it Works" items, I found an "American Idol" (smirk) kids video camera for $7 at Goodwill, and should be able to shoot video of this stuff in action, soon. Wow, maybe I can even add a Techno-Beat soundtrack and.... Just kidding. I'll spare you.

There is another guy on this site (kartmofo) who filmed while he was riding. You saw the camera fall several times in the process.

He hasn't posted in a long time.

LowRider

It's pretty comfortable. It'd be really nice to find an old bucket seat, but this is much better than the plywood bench seat I used to have on it. It corners pretty well up to a point, and then it'll lift the inside wheel. It has a very low rolling resistance, so even a 3hp will get it up to speed with the 4.5:1 ratio and 16" wheels. The 5hp was about perfect with that ratio. When I put the 8hp on it, I made it a 3:1 ratio. That's how I burned up the clutch in just a few hours. As of this writing, I just mounted a HarborFreight 6.5 motor with the old 4.5:1 ratio, was just about to hook up the throttle and ... it was dinner time. I'll finish it tomorrow morning and take vids. Looks promising. Those HF 6.5hp engines are a steal at $130! I've been putting them on everything.

These Harbor-Freight 6.5hp engines ROCK!

Finally got the HF 6.5hp engine on the Lowrider, and man, what fun! It has 16" wheels, a 10:45 tooth ratio, and since the engine is brand new, I've kept the governor set to 3600 rpm. It accelerates pretty good (torque steer!) and tops out easily at 38 mph with the governor kicking in. The sore spot (besides my back) is that the old #40 chain I'm using is stretched and climbing right off of the sprockets. I have a new chain on order. But the good news is, it works! I still have the other chain and 30 tooth sprocket to make a run at 57 mph, but I don't want to burn up another clutch. Still......? I'm going to put another hour or so on the motor and then switch to synthetic. The link below proves that these HF motors make ANYTHING haul butt!

Enjoy!

Thanks! I'm a big fan of everyone's work here! I just found an even comfy-er dining room chair to butcher for the lowrider, so that'll be my next mod. Also, a friend gave me a bike fork with a 26" wheel and a disk-brake set up. I'm thinking this might finally solve my braking problems and extend the life of my shoes. The weather's finally getting nicer, so I have little excuse not to get the cobwebs out and get moving on this stuff.
