how do i keep nut on fixed axle bolt from moving?

I have a fixed axle setup, i included a picture. today, i got the kart to run and after a few hours, the nut that i had on the bolt came off which made the wheel fall off as well. when i tighten the nut hard enough, it presses on the bearing and doesnt let the wheel roll.

what type of nut or setup should i use so the nut doesnt tighten more or become loose? in the front the rims, come out to the thread, in the back the rims dont reach the thread so i am able to tighten the back nuts all the way.

also, are those the right type of bearings to use? they went in a bit to easily for my tastes, nothing is really holding them in.

i was with my family today, my younger sister was the one riding when the wheel came off. i was afraid it would happen. even my dad mentioned the cotter pin method, it seems the best way so far.

if i did that method, my only concern would be that those bearing just slide in but dont fall into the wheel because of a small retaining ring. im afraid if the tires slide a bit back and forth the bearing would pop out.

Nylon locking nuts can be used 2-3 times easily before they wear out. You can't go around tightening the regular nuts because it will destroy bearings. Always remember that nut only goes snug, never so tight the wheel can not free spin.

i felt that i had the nut on there snug, it definately was not putting pressure onto the bearing causing the tire to not spin. maybe i had it too loose. it was just a hex nut on a bolt, i didnt use locking nuts or cotter pins.

would using a jam nut do a good job at keeping the first nut in place?

Always use something. Its scary to think the wheel could come off on its own. In some cases the poor man's solution is to put 2 nuts on (if space permits) the first one only up to the wheel and the second nut jammed into the first.

If a castle nut would fit then use one of them. That is all that holds the wheel on on a trailer.

You could always use a castle nut. You will have to drill a hile in the bolt for the cotter pin though

Nyloc (no, that's been mentioned) castle nut (no, that's there too) AH, double nut! No expense or mods, all you need is another nut & lock the two together :D

don't forget a washer between the bearing and the nut! maybe even 2. helps reduce the tendency of the bearing trying to turn the nut.
